Hannah J

Session Vocalist for Hire

Hannah J on SoundBetter

I’m a singer/songwriter influenced session vocalist with 10+ years of singing experience. I specialize in raw tuning accuracy, tight vocal stacking, and emotionally driven performances that bring songs to life. My goal is to deliver vocal stems that sound as polished as possible on their own, so you spend less time editing and more time producing.

I’m a Virginia-based singer/songwriter with over 10 years of singing experience. I specialize in delivering high-quality vocal stems that combine precision with emotional impact.

What sets me apart? I focus on giving you raw, polished vocals that sound great before any effects or editing. Performing live 3–5 times a week keeps my voice sharp, and my remote studio work focuses on giving producers and writers vocals that are ready to drop into their sessions with minimal cleanup.

My goal is simple: to save you time and elevate your track with a performance that feels both polished and authentic.

Interview with Hannah J

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The one featured on my page "Time and Space." I am especially proud of that project, because it was a song I wrote in high school, that I was able to finish with lyric genius, Marty Dodson, and phenomenal producer Kyle Jackson-Rachy. They helped me re-shape the lyrics, so that it would fit for sync, and I think it may be one of my favorite projects vocally as well.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Mostly projects for sync (film, tv, brands, etc.), and of course I am always writing. Lately, writing projects have included CCM, and country.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I promise that I will always work hard and put in the hours to get you the product your song deserves.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: The fact that I can do it from the comfort of my own home, and I LOVE being my own boss and setting my own hours.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: The amount of hours that goes into it, and vocal health education. I have had someone scoff at me before when I told them I was on vocal rest, and it definitely opened my eyes that it may sound silly to someone who is not on their voice as much as I am.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: Logistically - What's your vision for the project? Would you like comped/un-comped vocal takes? How many stacks do you want? Would you like minimal, or rich in harmonies, BGV's, ad libs? What are your expectations of the end result? Have you had a chance to listen to my attached portfolio of work, so you know what I sound like?

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: Always keep communication open, be clear about your vision for the project, and let me know how I can best deliver what you are looking for.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: Not counting food, water or shelter - I'd take a Bible, Simon and Patrick guitar, 2 notebooks (like, huge ones), and a pen. If I have to take food, water, and a tent, then I'd bring the Bible and guitar from the above list as my last two.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I have been pursuing music full time since the fall of 2023, but I always loved singing and writing from a young age. I was eleven when I picked up guitar and writing for the first time, and got involved in local paid gigs. After high school, I went straight into working as a worship facilitator for youth ministry, and then shortly thereafter went on to lead corporate worship services. Now, I play out about 3-5x per week, and in between, I am either writing or recording, doing booking work, etc. I also am involved in multiple songwriting communities, and have been specifically aimed at writing and recording for film, tv and brands in the past year.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: My default style is definitely sad girl, singer/songwriter. But I am working to be more diverse, and get into things like pop, soul/R&B, and more lively/upbeat music overall one day.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: I would absolutely love to work with Old Dominion one day. Mainly, I love their clever lyricism, and their melodies always keep me listening. As a writer and vocalist, I want to be a clever and captivating, just like them (but in my own way).

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Always approach every project with authenticity, even if you are trying something outside of your comfort zone.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: Typically, anything singer/songwriter, and mainly for the sync industry. However my goal is to be able to write all kinds. Lately, I have dived into writing CCM and country, as well as some rock and alternative. Vocally, I want to branch into singing some more pop/upbeat tracks, as well as soul/R&B, and beltier styles one day. I work on my vocals every day in order to work towards these goals, as well as am active in coaching from a vocal instructor.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: I'd say my strongest skill is the emotion I can bring to a song, while maintaining vocal accuracy. I really try my best to give every part of a song the attention it deserves.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: I feel I bring a pure tone to a song, and really do my best to make every lyric come to life - whether in the melody, the phrasing, the feel, the emotion underneath. My goal is that the listener is captivated.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: For vocal work, I typically warm up for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how my voice is doing. Then I will practice singing the project at hand, and really try to ground myself in the theme, story or emotion of the song. I start recording main vocal takes, and next I will typically comp the main vocal down to the final main vocal. From there, I add my doubles, harmonies, BGV's and ad libs.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: I have an SM7B microphone, and a Scarlett Solo interface. Very minimal, but very effective for what I do.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: I am inspired by any great music, great songwriter, or great vocalist. Currently, I am loving everything from Sabrina Carpenter's Short and Sweet album, to Adrianne Lanker, to rising artists like Allison Eide, and always Old Dominion (my favorite country band and songwriters.) Of course, I am also incredibly inspired by those in my writing circle, like Bill O'Hanlon, Marty Dodson, and Peter Boynton, and Kiersten Rae.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: Recording high quality vocal stems - this can include comped main vocals or main vocal takes (roughly 3-6 takes, if the client prefers comping), any doubles/triples, BGV's, harmonies, harmony stacks, ad libs, etc. I really do the best I am able to serve the project and whatever the client is desiring.
