Interview with Nicolò Rossini
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One of the projects I enjoyed the most was working on the beat for “Sigarette” by Rosewood, a trap track. This was a great example of a project where the artist asked me to be as spontaneous as possible, giving me complete creative freedom and allowing me to fully dedicate myself and my ideas to the work.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m currently working with several artists, even outside of this platform. I also have a Top Rated account on Fiverr, and on average I collaborate with 20–30 clients per month.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, at the moment I don’t know anyone to recommend.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: It depends on the circumstance and the situation. Neither is better than the other, it’s about knowing when it’s best to use one or the other, as they are simply two sides of the same coin.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: The promise I make to my clients is to always give my very best to deliver the highest quality work possible, making sure it aligns with their requests while also blending and creating an alchemy with my own musical vision.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I enjoy most about my work is bringing ideas to life especially the client’s ideas and contributing with my musical skills to turn them into something real.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: It really depends on the client and the type of work they need. Most of the time, I’m asked to create something original, other times to re-record an existing song, and sometimes to mix. I work with music at 360 from guitar, bass, and vocals to mixing and production so there are truly many different things I get asked to do, and just as many different types of clients I collaborate with.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: There’s really no misconception. I’ve never had any misunderstanding with clients because I always make sure to gather all the necessary information before accepting a project.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I try to gather as much information as possible about the client’s request and the result they want. I dig into the details to fully understand their needs, so I can deliver work that aligns perfectly with their brief.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice is to trust the process, because you’re choosing a professional who values emotion, expressiveness, and feeling over simply rushing to get the job done. What I aim to deliver is the full potential of the ideas the client brings to me.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were on a desert island and could only bring 5 pieces of gear, I would take my computer, electric guitar, vocal microphone, audio interface and bass guitar.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’m 30 years old and I’ve been working in this field for about 10 years. I first picked up a guitar back in elementary school, and since then my life has been entirely dedicated to music from the very beginning.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style focuses on bringing out the best in every project I work on, prioritizing emotions over templates or pre-made solutions. I’m a very emotional person, and I try to put that into my music as well, letting myself be deeply inspired by the vibe of each song.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I don’t have a specific artist I’d prefer to work with. What matters to me is that the person is kind, open, and motivated, with the genuine desire to create and bring out the best in a song.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: My tip is to let spontaneity and gut feeling take the lead.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work a lot on pop, rock, indie, rap, and trap, but I also have a strong metal background.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is the ability to think about a production in a 360° way, which allows me to deliver a balanced result. I can approach and work with the same quality on songwriting, arrangement, production, and mixing. This ensures that the song doesn’t feel like it was pieced together by different people – one doing the drums, another the bass, another the guitar which often results in a “lego-style” composition where ideas and instruments don’t naturally connect.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to be as natural as possible and not force the spontaneity of an idea. The key is letting passion, emotions, and expressiveness take the lead in the most human way possible, without overthinking the act of “having to write a song.” For me, that’s the real secret.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It really depends on what the client asks for and their specific request. I don’t have a single fixed process, because I believe every project should be approached individually, ensuring that each work is unique and not treated like an assembly line.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work on a MacBook with Logic Pro, where I record, mix, produce, and write music, basically everything needed to bring a song to life and I use the software professionally. This space, which I don’t even like to call a “studio,” is more of a place where I seek inspiration and try to create my best ideas. My setup includes real amplifiers such as a 5150 and a Marshall JCM800, Adam monitors, a wide range of high-quality plugins that help shape my productions and mixes, and premium microphones like the Aston Spirit. For instruments, I use guitars such as a Gibson Les Paul, a Fender Telecaster Custom Shop, and an Ibanez 7-string for rock and metal tracks that require lower tunings. I also work with a Fender Precision Bass and an Yamaha acoustic guitar. On the pedal side, I rely on Strymon units and other iconic pedals like the Ibanez TS9.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I always aim to bring out what the client asks for, following their requests while drawing inspiration from my musical background that ranges from pop to rock, through trap and metal. I don’t like to say there’s a single significant source of inspiration, because it’s really the wide musical background I’ve built from everything I listen to that shapes my creativity and helps me express what I have in mind.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of the time, I’m asked to create electric and acoustic guitar parts for a specific song, sometimes with references provided or with guidance based on certain genres or artists. Other common requests include re-recording existing songs or tracks made with artificial intelligence. For these types of projects, I don’t need sheet music, I can also work entirely by ear.
