Producer, mixer, composer, and performer with 15+ years’ experience. I help artists shape their sound with polished mixes, original compositions, and creative production. Skilled across Logic, Ableton & Pro Tools, with a hybrid setup of guitars, synths & digital tools. Collaborative, fast, and reliable.
Hi, I’m James - a producer, mixer, composer, and performer with over 15 years of experience in music production and performance. I specialise in bringing songs to life, whether that’s through full production, detailed mixing, custom composition, or live/session performance.
My background spans songwriting, sound design, and band performance, alongside years of teaching and leading degree-level music production programmes. That means I approach every project with both a creative and technical mindset, ensuring your music sounds polished, professional, and true to your vision.
What I can offer:
Mixing – balanced, clear mixes ready for release.
Composition – original music for songs, media, or collaborations.
Performance – guitar, vocals, or production input to enhance your track.
Production – from beat-making to full arrangements.
I work in Logic Pro, Ableton, and Pro Tools, with a hybrid setup of analogue synths, guitars, and digital tools. Clear communication, fast turnaround, and a collaborative approach are central to my process.
If you’re looking for someone who can adapt to your needs - whether that’s a single mix tweak or a full-scale production - I’d love to hear about your project.

Interview with JJR Music
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was a founding member of the band Pynch and recorded guitar on their Speedy Underground single Disco Lights. We supported The Libertines and released an album in 2023 - it was a great mix of collaboration, creativity, and live performance.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A mix of personal songwriting projects, band work, and music production collaborations.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: James Auwarter
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both - I love the warmth and character of analogue, but digital makes workflows efficient and flexible.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I’ll treat your music with care and deliver results that reflect your vision, with clear communication at every stage.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Collaborating - helping an idea grow into a finished track is the best part.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: "Can you work with my home-recorded tracks?" Absolutely - I work with everything from bedroom recordings to pro studio sessions. Good editing and mixing can bring out the best in any source material.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That creativity is just about inspiration - it’s really about consistent process and good communication.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What’s your vision for the project? Do you have reference tracks? What matters more to you: speed, experimentation, or polish?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know what you want the end result to feel like - even if you can’t describe it technically.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Acoustic guitar, OP-1, SM57 mic, laptop and an interface.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been writing, performing, and producing for over 15 years, both independently and as part of bands. Alongside this, I’ve built a career in higher education leading music production programmes.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Atmospheric, textured, and song-focused - I like combining organic and electronic elements.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Someone like Justin Vernon - because of his balance of songwriting, electronic production, and innovation.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t overthink it - momentum and intuition often lead to better results than endless tweaking.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Singer/songwriter, indie, and electronic music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Versatility and adaptability - I can jump between roles and support a project wherever it needs the most attention.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A fresh perspective, creative arrangement ideas, and technical polish - whether it’s production, mixing, or performance.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to work creatively within limitations - it stops decision fatigue and keeps the process fun and productive.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My home studio centres around a Mac with Logic, Pro Tools, and Ableton. I run mixes through an SSL SiX and Bus Compressor, monitor on Genelecs, and use a versatile mic collection. I also have synths, drum machines, and tape recorders for creative sound design.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by those who focus on process and make the most of their resources - the DIY spirit of creativity.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Co-writing, recording, production, and audio editing - from developing song ideas to polishing finished mixes.
