Jordan Black is exceptional in every way. A multi/octave singer who can seemingly do anything. R&B, pop, gospel, hip-hop, rock, and outstanding at vocal harmonies, both singing and arranging. Highest recommendation. Great to work with, personable, and tireless.
Interview with Jordan Black
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I am especially proud of the time I worked with none other than Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins at his home for a christmas single. I sang background vocals and it was a time I will cherish forever.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am gearing up to release a new single that I am especially excited about on Sep 9th entitled "what I want". I actually submitted the track on this platform as an example of my abilities.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I would absolutely recommend Cheyenne Wright. She is an unbelievable vocalist. She is efficient and always on time and she is always professional above all else.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. I am a bit of an audio engineering nerd, and there is something to be said about fully hearing the layers of a song.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To do my absolute best with what I have.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love meeting new people and the diversity of the type of jobs I do. I love movement and change.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They normally ask how I am able to sing such high notes and I tell them that their guess is a good as mine. Ha!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's easy.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask how they want me to vocally approach their song. Session singing is about adaptability and prioritizing the requests of the clients.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would say to be clear on your expectations and provide a definitive vision.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A microphone, laptop, beat machine, midi and keyboard.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: My career path is being a professional singer. I have been singing professionally for 8 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is pretty all encompassing. I am inspired by a lot and as a result I study a broad and vast amount of artists. As a result, I'd say my style is genre-bending and imaginative.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Ariana Grande. I appreciate her love for harmonies, stacks and just her overall choices as a vocalist.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I would say that less is often more.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I normally work on pop/ R&B, but there have been sessions where I have had to sing opera. I try to be as eclectic as a singer and listener of music as possible.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is singing.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring color, personality, dynamic and nuance.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: For writing, I normally come up with the melody in my head and then the production of the track immediately comes to me and then I am able to articulate to the producer. For session singing, my process is to diligently study what is asked of me in order to have a happy client,
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work very closely with a producer that has all professional gear. The best microphones, speakers and hardware.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am extremely inspired by Rodney Jerkins, Timbaland, the rascals and Pharrell. They have contributed greatly to the craft.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I do a lot of session singing for clients. It makes me happy to bring their vision to life and exceed expectations.
