Composer/guitarist with a PhD in Musicology looking for primarily for guitar session work, but also open to composing and songwriting jobs. I can also arrange pieces for any instruments.
Hailing from the remote town of Alston, England, but now based in Berlin, I am a versatile guitar player with around 20 years experience in a variety of projects. I studied at Newcastle University where I learned classical guitar and acquired my Bachelor and Master degrees in Music, before moving to Berlin and completing a PhD in musicology (an analysis of Radiohead's music). I am comfortable playing in practically any style of music (pop, rock, jazz, classical, folk, funk, etc.), I can learn songs and song parts quickly, and can also compose and arrange material. Interview with Dr. Thomas MacMillan
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock and pop music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Being able to learn and write parts quickly.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Creativity! And a diverse array of sounds. Although I only play guitar primarily, I utilise fingerpicking, bends, distortion, harmonics, slides, block chords, palm mutes, volume swells, etc. Any sounds which I feel adds something to the overall composition.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually listen to a song several times and break it down into its constituent sections. I then repeat these over and over while playing along, and figuring out what works. I will usually do many more guitar recordings than required, since the client can always take some of these out if the mix ends up being too busy.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use a Focusrite Saffire 6 Interface together with Reaper as a DAW and a Amplitude as an amplifier plug-in.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Radiohead! The topic of my PhD.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I'm usually providing electric guitar recordings for various songs and projects. In the past, musical styles have tended to be funk, rock, pop, jazz, and occasionally classical guitar - I am however, open to any style of music.
