Interview with Brittani Sutton

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm especially proud of my first release, "Seventeen," because it was my first, original release. It seemed like I would never be able to commit and follow through with releasing my own music. My role was singer-songwriter.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm currently working on completing two songs in the studio, though I've taken a significant break due to unprecedented circumstances. I'm also working on writing more original music with other artists.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I grew up in the era of CDs that evolved into digital music via iTunes and iPods, but I'd have to say I prefer digital music. I love how accessible it is and that you can listen to it right from your devices without needing a CD player or computer.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I promise to deliver excellence to the best of my ability, with accountability, integrity, transparency, and adaptability.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: What type of music do you do? My response - Contemporary Christian, Gospel, Indie Pop, and R&B.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: 1. What are the goals of the project and overall vision? What specific services are they looking for? 2. What is the projected timeline of their project, level of urgency, and desired turnaround time? 3. Are they looking for someone with advanced or high-level experience? If not, how flexible are they with working entry or mid-level experienced people? 4. What style, genre, and vibe do they desire, and if they have any music samples I can refer to? 5. What's their work style and schedule?

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: I work best with organization, clarity, and tangibility. Having a clear vision, steps, and organization will help me to know what a customer is looking for and how I can contribute. Also, I am new to freelancing music services, so flexibility and understanding are greatly appreciated.

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: Laptop, mic, headphones, DAW, and pop-filter.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: I've been working on original and cover music, along with producers and other musicians, since 2016. It has been on and off, though. I've taken breaks and recommitted over the years.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: I would describe my style as a blend of Indie Pop and Indie Christian Pop, and Indie Urban Gospel, with touches of Contemporary Worship and Alternative R&B. My music often incorporates acoustic sounds, rich with layering, harmonies, and vocal stacks. I aim to create an atmospheric ambience through music that is heartfelt, ethereal, and moving, especially with violin, cello, piano, and acoustic guitar.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: Live artists I would love to work with are: Ed Sheeran: to learn about his songwriting technique, inspiration, and development, especially since he's written so many amazing songs. Tori Kelly: to also learn about her songwriting technique, especially since she produced her first album, and her seemingly effortless singing technique, and lastly, for insight into how she endures as a Christian in the music industry. Sia: For her incredible creativity, authenticity, and fearlessness in art. I'd like to learn from her creative process. Artists who have passed that I would love to work with include: Michael Jackson: Of course, for being the king of Pop, his skill, style, and music are unmatched. I'd want to learn everything. Whitney Houston: I'd love to learn from her life experience, especially as a Christian in the music industry. Her vocal technique, talent, and skill are also unmatched, so I'd love to learn from her in that.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: I'm not a music producer myself, but a couple of tips that I can share from working with music producers are: try to know your vision for a song before you get too far into the process, and work with producers who resonate with and complement your vision. A great tip I've learned is to research producers on socials before working with them, to ensure their style resonates with yours.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: I work on Gospel and Contemporary Christian music, with a feel of Worship, Pop, and R&B sounds. I also incorporate music that is light, relatable, and life-giving, similar to Hollyn and Tori Kelly, who both write Christian songs and songs about everyday, relatable life.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: My strongest skill as a singer-songwriter is raw connection. Relating to others without an insincere connection, but a true, authentic connection. I also have more tangible skills like administration, organization, and adaptability, or a willingness to learn.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: I bring raw vulnerability, authenticity, and honesty to a song. Being a singer-songwriter to me means expressing your thoughts and feelings, or your soul, authentically, through the art talent of singing and writing songs. It's an expression of what's in your heart and aligns with Proverbs 23:7 (NKJV), Proverbs 4:23, and Matthew 15:18. What is in your heart is being revealed, so to me, it's important to bring raw authenticity, Truth, creativity, and uniqueness to a song.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: My typical work process includes, but is not limited to: Step 1. Consultation (30–45 min): We’ll discuss your vision, style, requested services, project scope, timeline, and terms (payment, delivery, turnaround, credits, and other necessary details). Step 2. Creation & Collaboration: I’ll begin work on the agreed start date, keeping you updated along the way. Up to 2 free revisions are included to ensure you’re fully satisfied. Step 3. Final Delivery: Once the project is approved and payment is complete, I’ll deliver polished, ready-to-use files in your preferred format.

  33. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  34. A: My studio setup is fairly typical, comprised of the following: Gear: Blue Yeti mic, traditional headphones, an HP laptop, a MacBook, Focusrite Scarlett DAW, and a speaker with XLR cords Software: Ableton Live Lite and GarageBand (the free version) I'm also open to recording in an official studio for an additional fee.

  35. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  36. A: Some legendary musicians who inspire me include CeCe Winans, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Michael Jackson, Dolly Parton, James Taylor, and Tupac. Some newer musicians who inspire me include: Bruno Mars, Ed Sheeran, Tori Kelly, Madison Ryann Ward, and Taylor Swift.

  37. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  38. A: I offer comprehensive vocal services—lead, background, stacked vocals, dubs, and harmonies—along with topline and lyric songwriting, YouTube covers, album art design, and electronic press kit design. I’m also open to modeling and music-video acting.
