Interview with Edgar Abraham Vivas Blanco
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started playing piano at age 4 and cello at age 7. I joined a children's orchestra at age 8 and won first place in my country's national orchestra competition. I was a member of the Caracas Municipal Symphony Orchestra for 8 years and of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela until I moved to Argentina, where I am currently Principal Cellist of the Teatro Argentino de La Plata Orchestra and an artist with FEVER, the platform that produces the Candlelight concerts in Buenos Aires and La Plata with my "VELSE String Quartet." I have performed with artists such as Claudio Abbado, Gustavo Dudamel, Sir Simon Rattle, Apocalyptica, Wisin & Yandel, Olga Tañón, Luis Miguel, Rosalía, Yo-Yo Ma, Calle 13, and many others. Today I have about 34 years of professional experience
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Cinematic (documentary and movies), Symphonic, videogames, soundtracks, jingles, indie, pop, jazz, Rock, contemporary, academic, electronic, R&B, Hip-Hop, Folk (Venezuelan, Argentinian, Armenian, Japanese, Chinese, German, Sweddish, American, Latin, etc)
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'm a very studious musician, which means I'm always prepared. I know my instruments very well and have a lot of recording experience. So, among my best skills are the speed at which I record, the emotional depth I achieve, and the variety of unique and different performances I can create.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I am known for creating deep and magical atmospheres when I play, and that's because I try to enrich any melody with my own personality, creativity and technique, so that it sounds authentic, honest, unique, "as if it were the last melody I would ever play and I wanted it to be worthwhile," I give myself completely, putting my knowledge and experience at the service of the music.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually sight-read the score and record the first take, which I then deliver since I know the client can use it during post-production. Then I practice the technical aspects I found challenging while analyzing the chords, climactic points, and trying to decipher what makes the piece great. Afterward, I record two or three musical proposals, with different bowing techniques, fingerings, dynamics, emotions, and playing styles. This way, I ensure I deliver two or three versions that I feel can truly highlight the cello's role in the song, and I provide all the material (between two and four tracks) to the client so they can choose the one they like best.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I've been a freelancer for many years, but only two years ago did I start working from home, and I don't do it full-time. Because of this, I work with a professional studio (the best in my city). However, I have a modest home studio setup, which includes the following: Hardware - MackBook Air Pro - UBehringer U-Phoria UMC404HD - AKG P120 Mic - ZOOM H1 XY Mic My Instruments: 1)- An Italian handcrafted cello from 1890, with a bright and focused sound, valued at $25,000. 2)- A German-made cello from 1915, with a warm, rounded, and resonant sound, featuring subtle nasal tones in its beautiful, sandy tone, and a rich, delicate harmonic partials, valued at $17,000. 3) -A Cremones cello from 1980—my personal favorite—with deep bass and a warm, powerful, and deeply emotive sound, valued at $35,000.

Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I've been a Symphony-orchestral-musician my entire life, so I'm very accustomed to playing opera, symphonic music, and musicals. However, during my training at the "Ars Nova" School of Music using the Berkeley College method, I gained extensive experience playing and producing modern band music with electric cello, drums, synthesizers, and much more. Since becoming a freelancer about 10 years ago, I've primarily recorded original songs in pop, rock, heavy metal, jazz, and video game soundtracks. I also do a lot of academic work, including recordings of Baroque works by composers like Bach, Beethoven, and Debussy, with my work on contemporary academic compositions being particularly noteworthy.
