Interview with Zhenya

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One of my proudest projects was my track “COCK!” — I produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered it myself. It taught me how to push creative boundaries while maintaining high production quality.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently mixing and mastering multiple singles for independent artists, as well as finishing my own upcoming releases.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet — I’m new to SoundBetter, but I’m open to building connections here.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I work digitally for flexibility and speed, but I use analog-style plugins and processing to bring warmth and character.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I’ll deliver a mix or master that you’re proud to release, with clear communication and unlimited care for your project.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Helping artists hear their music at its full potential — seeing their reaction to the final product is the best feeling.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Q: “Can you make my track sound like [artist]?” A: I can match the quality and vibe while keeping it unique to your sound.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That mixing and mastering can fix a bad recording. Great results start with a great performance and clean tracking.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What’s your vision for the track? Are there any reference songs you’d like me to use for inspiration? How do you want the final product to feel?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for someone who listens to your vision and communicates clearly. The best mixes come from collaboration, not just technical skill.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: I’d grab my iPhone and a pair of regular earphones—simple but enough to get ideas flowing. If I’m lucky, I’d have an interface I could hook up to my phone so I can record anywhere. I’ve always believed it’s not about the gear, it’s about knowing how to make the most out of what you’ve got.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been doing this for almost a decade. I started off purely as an artist, but over time I realized I’m good at every part of the process—from recording and mixing to mastering and production. That drive to handle it all myself pushed me to develop a unique approach and refine my skills until I could deliver professional results in any situation. Now, I bring that same versatility and attention to detail to every project I touch.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I work on music that blends the modern Bay Area West Coast vibe with my own Slavic soul influence. It’s a mix of street energy and deep emotional tones—what I like to call “Bay Area Slavic Soul.” Every track is crafted to hit hard while still carrying a unique emotional depth.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to collaborate with modern-day West Coast artists who carry that authentic, regional sound, as well as major Russian artists who bring unique cultural influence and emotion to their music. Blending these styles would allow me to merge my West Coast engineering approach with my Slavic roots, creating something fresh and powerful.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always start with the cleanest possible recording. A polished mix begins with high-quality raw tracks — you can’t “fix it in the mix” as much as people think.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Hip-hop, R&B, trap, and alternative styles with dark or emotional undertones — but I’m versatile enough to work in almost any genre.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Attention to detail. I catch and fix the subtle things most people overlook, which often makes the difference between a good mix and a great one.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: A fresh perspective, my vibe, a fine-tuned ear, and a commitment to bringing out the best in every performance. I make tracks sound polished without losing their raw energy or character.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: When a client sends me their stems, I review each one carefully before importing them into a new project in my DAW. I make sure every element is perfectly aligned with the instrumental so the foundation is tight from the start. From there, I focus on cleaning up and enhancing each track, balancing levels, adding effects, and making creative adjustments. I mix with precision and always pay attention to the details within the details, ensuring the final product sounds professional and ready for release.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I record in my car, which gives me a unique and unorthodox creative environment. I’ve developed my own methods to make recordings sound professional, often tracking through BandLab and applying my personal recording techniques. At home, I use FL Studio for mixing and mastering, and I also collaborate with engineer friends who work in Ableton and Logic Pro. My setup and mindset are all about thinking outside the box and finding alternative ways to get the best results. My edge is obsessive attention to micro-details—tone, dynamics, space—because expensive gear means nothing if you don’t hear what matters.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by Akon’s versatility, Drake’s consistency and global appeal, and AWAX’s raw authenticity. Each of them brings a different energy that pushes me to create mixes that are both polished and full of emotion.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I specialize in mixing and mastering tracks to a professional, radio-ready standard. Whether it’s hip-hop, R&B, trap, or alternative, I focus on enhancing clarity, balance, and punch while keeping the artist’s unique vibe intact.
