Interview with Batts
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I’ll treat your record like it’s mine: clear communication, realistic expectations, and no cutting corners. You’ll get a track I’m genuinely happy to put my name on, and I won’t disappear halfway through the process.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being part of that moment where a rough idea becomes a real song someone’s proud to play to people. I also like building long-term relationships with artists and seeing their sound develop over time
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Most people ask “Can you make my song sound like [artist]?” My answer: we’ll use your references as a guide for vibe and quality, but the goal is to make your record – something that sits in that world without sounding like a cheap copy. They also ask about revisions and turnaround; I’m clear up front about both so there are no surprises
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That producers just drag a few loops in, throw a preset on the mix and it’s done. In reality it’s a lot of taste, problem-solving and detail work to make a song feel effortless
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask what they’re trying to achieve with the release, which artists/songs they want to sit next to, what their budget and timeline are, and what a “win” looks like for them. I also ask how they like to work and how involved they want to be in feedback.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: MacBook, an audio interface, speakers, a mic, and a guitar or piano.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been producing for around 8+ years and working full-time as a producer for the last couple of years. I studied Music & Sound Production at university, then moved into working directly with independent artists on custom beats, mixing and mastering.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Melodic, atmospheric and modern, with drums that still knock. I like records that feel wavy and emotional but still have bounce. Everything is built around the vocal so there’s space for the artist to actually say something.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Brent Faiyaz. The space he sits in – dark R&B, textured production, honest writing – is exactly the lane I love building in. His music leaves a lot of room for atmosphere and detail, which is where I’m strongest as a producer.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Pick a few great sounds and make space for the vocal instead of stacking 30 tracks. Good arrangement and headroom will do more for your song than another pad or counter-melody ever will
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Melodic rap, R&B, trap-soul and Afro-influenced records – wavy, emotional, modern tracks with bounce. If it sits somewhere between Drake / Brent / Don Toliver / DBE, that’s my lane. But I am versatile and have credits across most genres.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Translating vague ideas (“I want this to feel like X”) into a finished, modern record. I’m very vocal-focused, so my productions and mixes always leave space for the artist while still hitting hard
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A clear sense of direction and taste. I’m good at finding the emotional core of an idea, choosing sounds that support the vocal and arranging the record so it actually goes somewhere instead of looping for three minutes
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First I get clear on the artist’s goals, release plans and references. Then I build a custom beat around their voice, arrange it with the song in mind, and once vocals are recorded I handle the mix and master. There’s feedback at each stage so the artist always knows where we’re heading.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work out of a treated home studio in the UK using FL Studio, the FabFilter bundle and a solid monitoring chain I know inside out. Adam Audio T7V monitors, A couple of guitars, synths, a reliable vocal chain and a focused set of plug-ins keep the workflow fast and consistent.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Producers like Pharrell, OZ, Boi-1da, Mustard + many more inspire me. Artist-wise I pull a lot from Drake, Tory Lanez, Brent Faiyaz, Don Toliver, Gunna and the whole melodic rap / R&B space.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I help independent artists turn ideas and demos into release-ready records. Most of my work is custom beat production built around their voice and references, plus mixing and mastering their singles and EPs.
