Interview with ansgaSound
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog is a hassle and a half to work with, so digital is my choice. It's more flexible, too, and nearly always more reliable.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Modern, yet timeless.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Not a skill as such, but I have a keen attention to detail.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That anything can be "fixed in the mix". There's only so much one can do to a track after it's been recorded. Get it right at the source.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What genre of metal is it? What is your budget? What is your timeline?
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Get it right at the source. Tune and intonate instruments properly, and record them well. Even the greatest mix can't fix a subpar performance.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Metal. It's all metal of some description.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Expertise, experience, and my tastes.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I'll listen to the rough mix/demo to get a feel for the song., and think about what kind of treatment the song needs. I will take into account the client's/artist's direction about how they want it to sound, and proceed to mix song accordingly. Next, get approval/revisions from client, revise if needed. Repeat until client is satisfied. Move on to other songs on album/EP, if any.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: 'Tis but a humble home studio: Some treatment on the walls, appropriately-sized EVE Audio monitor speakers and an inappropriate-for-the-space Adam Audio subwoofer. However, you might find that my mixes don't sound humble.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: On the mixing side, Jordan Valeriote.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing and mastering metal music.
