Interview with .
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I have never been more satisfied with the current group I play with (Jordan Fisher). Putting together the set and making the live arrangements has been one of the most liberating musical experiences I have had to date. The musicians execute my ideas with absolute precision, and the arrangements hit SO hard live.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently, I am touring nationally and internationally with Hollywood Records artist Jordan Fisher as Guitarist/Musical Director.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Julia Ross. If you don't check her out you are robbing yourself!!!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: We live in the Digital age. It's current, it sounds great, and 99% of listeners couldn't tell you the difference in sound when it comes down to it. Technology has made (in some cases) digital sound BETTER than analog.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise my guitar parts will have you and everyone else in the room have an un-erasable stank face.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I am endlessly blessed to be where I am with music right now. I get to travel the world, with people I love, creating music that I love, all while sharing that positivity and love with thousands of people. Living the dream every day!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: Can you make the guitar sound like that one Bruno Mars song? A: Yas of course! Q: Can you put a shred solo in the second half of the last chorus? A: YES.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception about what I do personally is that since I studied jazz, I don't play simple parts for pop/other styles.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the message of this song? What textures/sounds are you hearing?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I generally advise my clients to be open with communication and to have a list of their expectations and desires for the project.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: (hoping I can find an outlet) Fender Twin Reverb, PRS Hollowbody II, my pedalboard, Laptop, and audio interface. It's all you really need to survive ;)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Since I was 10 years old the guitar was my only option. There were no distractions and no other possible career paths. I applied to one school only, (Berklee college of music) where I earned my degree in Jazz guitar performance with a minor in Harmony, and then moved to Los Angeles to pursue my career as a touring guitarist and session musician.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is an eclectic mix of Jazz/Gospel harmony with a blues rock background.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would have loved to work with Michael Jackson. His production is simple and infectious, dynamically conscious, and full of energy.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Be overly sensitive to dynamics. Dynamics (especially with guitar) is easily neglected when it comes to recording. Each song is a living and breathing organism and that needs to be prevalent in the music. Find what each song section is asking for and deliver!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Pop/Rock, Soul/R&B, Jazz, Singer-Songwriter
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Arranging/Performance
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: The guitar is one of the most versatile and energetic instruments. I bring your songs to life! Whether it be an uptempo rock riff, of an acoustic jazz chord melody, I'll spice up your record with love!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: After speaking with the client to address the specific roadmap for the tune, I generally send 2-3 different versions of each section so that the client has options that they might not have thought of previously thought of.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Abelton Live 9, Waves, AXE Effects, Fender Twin Reverb, SM57
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Michael Jackson, Prince, Bruno Mars, The 1975, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Gallant, Daniel Ceaser, Kevin Garrett, John Mayer, Emily King, Allen Stone
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Arrange and record guitar-parts for songs, whether it be for a demo, youtube video, finished record, or TV track.
