Hi, I'm Steve.
I don't have any Grammys, and I've never worked with any major label artists, but I've spent many hours over the course of years working to hone the skills to be able to mix music to a full, clear and, most-importantly, nice-sounding result that really showcases the music in its best light.
While I mostly work with organic-sounding genres like americana and rock/alternative, I also love working with genres like pop and hip-hop that feature more electronic instrumentation and an in-your-face sound.

Interview with Steve Lawless
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being able to hear different music and different genres than I would normally hear, and being able to appreciate how the raw building blocks come together to form a single, unified song.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing is just setting the volumes of the different tracks and putting some effects on them. While the levels are important, a large part of mixing is also using EQ to make space for the various sounds and making them fit together like puzzle pieces.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started learning mixing back in 2013, when I was still in the Air Force and only had a 2-channel interface and an old laptop. Since then, I've been learning more every day, and have upgraded my equipment to be able to record and mix almost any size project.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I bring the tracks in and listen to the song, as-is, and, after gain-staging them, work on building a static mix. I use a template that contains some of my most-used tools and routing, which is both flexible as well as lets me focus on making fast creative decisions that benefit the song, without having to keep stopping and getting out of the zone to search through plugins and set up routing.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by, and pattern my mixing style and philosophy on, Joe Carrell from Nashville.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I use a Presonus StudioLive console as my interface/workstation controller, and I work in Studio One.
