Interview with Ivor Schnaidman
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m especially proud of my album The Grapes Are Dead, where I took on multiple roles as a musician. This project reflects my artistic vision and technical skills, blending raw emotion with polished production. It pushed me creatively and showed my ability to bring a cohesive and authentic songs from start to finish. I was luck to work with great musicians e engineers that taught me a lot.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment, I’m working with a Brazilian rock singer and in pre-production for my second album.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I don’t know anyone personally on SoundBetter yet, but I look forward to meeting great professionals to collaborate with and also to be recommended myself.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I prefer mixing mostly digitally using plugins, but I like to run some elements through preamps for added warmth by printing the signal. For recording, I favor real instruments like amplifiers and acoustic drums. I enjoy blending these approaches to create a rich and dynamic sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to clients is to keep it real—honest, authentic, and true to the music and the artist’s vision.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love seeing a rough idea come to life and evolve into a full, vibrant song.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Clients often asks about the gear. Ask about my workflow, how involved they’ll be in the process, and how I balance technical quality with preserving the song’s emotion. I explain that I focus on close communication, tailoring each project to the artist’s vision, and blending analog warmth with modern clarity to keep the music authentic
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One big misconception is that music Production of mixing is just about technical skills or pushing buttons. In reality, it’s a deeply creative process that requires emotional sensitivity, intuition, and collaboration to truly bring a song to life.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask about the artist’s vision, musical influences, and what they want to achieve with the project. I also inquire about the mood or story behind the songs, their preferred sound, and any reference tracks. Understanding these helps me tailor the production to fit their unique style and goals
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be clear about your vision but stay open to collaboration. The best results come when you trust the process and communicate openly. Choose someone who listens deeply, understands your goals, and brings both technical skill and artistic sensitivity to the project
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were on a desert island, I’d take my favorite fender guitar, a versatile fender amplifier, a quality Neumman condenser microphone, a portable audio interface, and a reliable set of great headphones. With these, I could capture ideas, record, and keep creating no matter where I am
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been a musician for 20 years, playing various instruments in several bands. I’ve owned Epah Estudios for 18 years, where I’m involved daily—recording, tracking, mixing, and constantly learning from everyone who comes through. Starting as a drummer and gradually expanding into production, recording, and mixing. My own projects and albums have shaped my approach, giving me deep insight into the creative and technical sides of making music.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is real and human—I aim to capture authentic performances with real people playing. I focus on a vintage, organic sound and avoid unnecessary editing to keep the music alive and natural
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Dave Grohl because he’s a multi-instrumentalist who deeply understands what’s going on in his head when he plays and writes music. I’m also inspired by Shooter Jennings for his authentic approach to blending country and rock, which aligns closely with my own style
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Be more than just a technician—be a part of the music itself. Be a presence that listens closely and plays exactly what the song needs, like an invisible character who leaves a lasting mark.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I work on all types of rock—from classic and country rock to alternative and Americana—always favoring real instruments and organic performances, blending vintage influences with modern clarity.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is sensitivity and intuition—connecting deeply with each song so I can shape raw, emotional, and authentic productions that truly reflect the artist’s vision.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring emotional connection, raw authenticity, and a blend of analog warmth with modern clarity—always serving the song and the artist’s vision.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually listen to the song or its early sketches until it really starts to sink in. Once I connect with it, ideas begin to flow—shaped by my own references and the unique vibe of each track. I combine my vision, in whatever role I’m playing, with the client’s perspective and what they’re aiming for. The result is a tailored, honest production that serves the song and feels true to the artist.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I’m the owner of Epah Estudios, one of the first studios in Brazil with a Dolby-certified room for mixing in Dolby Atmos. My setup combines the best of analog and digital. I use an Avid S4 console with Neumann monitors, and work exclusively in Pro Tools with a full range of plugins. I also rely on premium gear like Rupert Neve, Avalon, Manley, SSL, and SPL preamps, along with Neumann, Rode and AKG microphones. I often track guitars through different amps and mics, and I love running some elements through analog gear to add warmth and character.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by artists and producers who blend raw emotion with strong storytelling—like Rick Rubin, Sturgill Simpson, Johnny Cash and Shooter Jennings. I also admire musicians like Dave Mattews, Dave Grohl, James Hetfield, Jerry Cantrell, Bob Dylan, Lenny Kravitz, Chris Stapleton, Neil Young and Mutantes who bring authenticity and grit to everything they do
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I most commonly work as a music producer, session musician, and mixing engineer for artists looking for authentic, emotional, and high-quality tracks. Many of my clients come to me with a rough idea or demo, and I help bring it to life with a warm, organic sound that blends vintage soul with modern clarity. Whether it’s building a track from scratch or adding tasteful parts to an existing production, I aim to serve the song and enhance the artist’s vision. Most of my work comes from producing and recording my own albums, which gives me a deep understanding of how to craft authentic, emotional songs. That experience helps me guide clients through the process—from arrangement to performance—with a clear artistic direction and professional sound.
