Interview with Adam Tomcho

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My band Palinoia and the creation of our first record. I was (and am) the bassist and a songwriter for the project.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: My band Palinoia just released our debut record and are currently moving into live performances.

  6. A: What sound(s) do you have in mind? Specific references?

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I started taking piano lessons at age 4, switched to bass at around 12. I attended the Berklee College of Music and have been playing in projects, both formal and informal, ever since.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: A mixture and punk-inspired aggression and prog-influenced sophistication. Knowing when to get adventurous and melodic and knowing when to lock in with the guitars and drums.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Anything under the rock/metal umbrella.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: A mixture and punk-inspired aggression and prog-influenced sophistication. Knowing when to get adventurous and melodic and knowing when to lock in with the guitars and drums.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: For writing bass parts it's pretty straightforward. I start by getting down root notes and creating a super simple part. Then I'll go back through it and pick out spots for fills, counter-melodies, and where the part van get a bit "busier" without bring intrusive.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: Unless specifically requested otherwise, all of my recording is done DI. I record directly into Logic, using Parallax and/or a Darkglass Anagram for tone creation.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Justin Chancellor is my biggest inspiration when writing bass parts. For more general songwriting, people like Steven Wilson, Mikael Åkerfeldt, The Mars Volta, etc.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: Session bass work, usually for rock, metal, and all other adjacent genres.
