Interview with Upstate Music Studios
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: "Durag" ft. Georgie Zaven by Sergio's Packpack Worked on from beginning to end with entire team.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Working with record label on artist releases.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Shane Bauman ("Sheux-Bear")
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital, faster and saves space. The difference between the two for my select genres is negligible.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: You'll leave with more than you paid for. I don't just press record, I educate and give feedback.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Meeting new people and hearing new sounds.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Often artists ask "was that a good take?" I've noticed, many need guidance. We offer that here.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I'm not just a recording engineer. I'll give you feedback if you wish. I'll tell you if your song needs improvement, or if you just need a new song.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are your goals? Who are your influences?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Try to make sure the studio you're looking for doesn't have an ego. It's hard to work with a producer or engineer with an ego.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: MacBook, iPhone, Headphones, Microphone, Apollo Interface
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Started song-writing in 2009 while in college and picked up the guitar. Began collaborating with other artists in 2010 in rap and hip-hop. Graduated from Belmont University with a B.A. in Audio Engineering in 2015. Shifted into producing in 2016 working with Pop and EDM artists. Started a music studio business in 2020.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Transparent
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kanye, due to his influences on my work, I'd like to learn more about his process.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Focus more on production and less on mixing. Mixing won't save your song, it will improve it.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Hip-hop, EDM, and Pop
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Vocal Mixing and song writing
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Song writing, arrangement, guidance, feedback
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Discuss goals with artist, listen to references, establish a connection with artist, and get to work.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: There are 3 studio house with 2 recording studios and one beat production studio. Digital-focused studio, specializing in vocal recording.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Kanye West, Diplo, Marshmello, Skrillix, Pharrell
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Recording through UAD Unison Plugins, Beat and Vocal Mixing with leading industry plugins (such as FabFilter, Izotope, Plug-in Alliance, etc.), and Mastering
