Interview with Sonry Simon
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m particularly proud of is a multilingual song I wrote and composed that blended English, French, and Haitian Creole. My role was to create meaningful lyrics and a melody that reflected the emotions of the story, connecting different cultures through music. This project was special because it allowed me to showcase my versatility and my ability to craft songs that resonate with diverse audiences. The positive feedback I received from listeners motivated me greatly.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now, I’m working on several songwriting projects across different genres like R&B, pop, electro, and compas. I’m also developing some multilingual songs in English, French, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. My focus is on delivering high-quality, emotional music that connects with listeners and meets my clients’ unique visions.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, I don’t personally know anyone on SoundBetter yet, but I’m always open to collaborating with talented professionals and discovering great artists on the platform.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I work mostly in the digital domain because it offers flexibility, speed, and accessibility. Digital tools allow me to compose, edit, and share music quickly, which is essential for meeting client deadlines. However, I value the warmth and character of analog sounds and try to incorporate that feeling into my digital productions whenever possible.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to my clients is to deliver authentic, high-quality songs that truly reflect their vision and emotions. I commit to clear communication, timely delivery, and making sure each project is crafted with passion and attention to detail. Your satisfaction and the connection your music creates with listeners are my top priorities.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most about my work is that writing is my passion and composing is a challenge I enjoy. Having my hobby and a challenge combined in my job makes it the best kind of work. It keeps me motivated and constantly growing as an artist.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Some of the most frequently asked questions from my clients are: How long will it take to deliver the song? I usually deliver a first draft within 24 to 72 hours, depending on the project complexity. Can you write songs in multiple languages? Yes, I write in English, French, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. How many revisions are included? The number of revisions depends on the package selected, typically 1 to 2 revisions are included. What styles do you specialize in? I’m versatile but especially passionate about R&B and pop, while also working with electro, soca, and compas. How do you ensure the song matches my vision? I keep open communication and ask detailed questions about your style, emotions, and preferences before starting.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions about what I do is that songwriting and music creation is just about putting words and notes together quickly. In reality, it’s a deep creative process that involves understanding emotions, storytelling, and crafting melodies that truly connect with listeners. It takes time, skill, and passion to create songs that resonate and feel authentic.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask clients questions that help me fully understand their vision and needs. Common questions include: What style or genre do you want for the song? What is the main message or emotion you want to convey? Are there any specific references or artists that inspire you? Do you have a deadline or timeline for the project? How many revisions do you expect? Do you want the song in a specific language or multiple languages? These questions help me deliver a final product that truly matches their expectations.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice to clients looking to hire a service provider like me is to communicate clearly about their vision and expectations from the start. Be open about the style, mood, and message you want to convey in your music. Also, provide as much detail as possible and don’t hesitate to give feedback during the process—it helps me tailor the work perfectly to your needs. Finally, trust the creative process and maintain good communication to achieve the best results.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I were stranded on a desert island and could only bring five pieces of equipment, I would choose: a notebook and pen to capture ideas and write lyrics, my computer to compose and produce music, headphones to focus on sound quality, and a speaker to share and test the music in different environments. These tools are essential for my creative process, even in challenging situations.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been involved in songwriting and music composition for several years. Over time, I’ve developed my skills by working on various projects, ranging from personal compositions to collaborations with artists across multiple genres and languages, including English, French, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. This experience has helped me become a versatile and adaptable musician, capable of delivering quality songs tailored to different styles and client needs.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is versatile and adaptable, blending emotional storytelling with catchy melodies. I enjoy working across genres but have a particular passion for R&B and pop. I like to create songs that are both heartfelt and memorable, combining smooth vocals with modern rhythms, and I also incorporate influences from electro, soca, and compas to add unique flavors.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with artists like Gims, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, and Rutshelle because their stories inspire me deeply. Their journeys and unique styles motivate me to create meaningful music. I’m confident I could write a full album of 13 to 15 songs tailored to their voices and artistic visions, bringing fresh ideas and authentic emotions to their projects.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Focus on the emotion first, technical perfection second. A song that feels real and connects emotionally will always go further than one that’s just well-polished. Make sure the lyrics, melody, and delivery reflect the core emotion or message you want to share. Also, don’t be afraid to leave space in the production — sometimes less is more. Let the vocal breathe, let the silence speak, and always serve the song, not just the beat.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on a wide range of genres including Pop, R&B, Hip Hop, and Pop Rock, as well as Afrobeat, Latin, and other styles that have a solid structure. My strength lies in my ability to adapt my songwriting and melodic approach to suit the unique characteristics of each genre. Whether it’s a high-energy Hip Hop beat, a smooth Pop track, or a more traditional Pop Rock arrangement, I tailor my work to enhance the song’s emotional and rhythmic core. This versatility allows me to collaborate effectively with artists and producers from various musical backgrounds, ensuring that the final product is both structured and creatively inspired.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is writing powerful and memorable lyrics across multiple languages. I’m able to capture emotions and tell stories in a way that feels natural and relatable — whether it’s in English, French, Spanish, or Haitian Creole. I also have a strong instinct for vocal melody and phrasing, which helps me deliver toplines that are both catchy and emotionally honest. This combination of language, feeling, and melody is what makes my work stand out.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring emotion, authenticity, and connection to every song I work on. Whether it's through lyrics or melody, my goal is always to make the listener feel something. I have a strong sense for storytelling, catchy phrasing, and vocal flow — especially when writing in multiple languages. I also understand how to match the energy of a track with the right words and melodies, whether it’s a soft ballad or an upbeat pop song. More than anything, I bring versatility and heart. I adapt to the artist’s voice and vision while adding a creative spark that makes the song unique and unforgettable.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My process always starts with listening — to the client’s vision, the reference track (if any), or simply the emotion they want to express. Then I brainstorm lyrics, themes, and melodies that match their style and message. I usually sketch ideas in my notebook first, then refine them digitally. For toplines, I hum different melodies until I find the most natural and catchy one. If needed, I record a vocal guide to help the client visualize the final result. I stay in touch with the client throughout the process to make sure we’re aligned, and I’m always open to feedback and revisions. My goal is to create something that feels honest, unique, and true to the artist’s identity.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My setup is simple but effective — it allows me to focus on songwriting and vocal creativity without distractions. I work with my notebook, where I sketch ideas, lyrics, and concepts. I use my laptop as my main tool for organizing sessions, editing lyrics, and recording basic vocal demos. I also collaborate with a producer who works with FL Studio, allowing me to create custom instrumentals or arrange vocal toplines over professional tracks when needed. This hybrid setup gives me the flexibility to deliver high-quality writing and melodies, whether it’s a raw idea or a more complete demo.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by a wide range of artists across different genres and cultures. Ed Sheeran for his songwriting and storytelling. Michael Jackson and Chris Brown for performance and melody. Justin Bieber for his evolution as an artist. Gims, Youssoupha, Amir, and Indila for their lyrical depth and unique voices in French music. I also admire Tyler, the Creator for his originality, Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez for their artistic range and discipline, and Rihanna for her ability to blend emotion and attitude in every track. All of them inspire me to stay versatile, emotional, and globally connected in the way I write and create.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly write original lyrics and create custom vocal melodies for artists and producers — often in multiple languages such as English, French, Spanish, and Haitian Creole. Clients usually come to me with a theme, an idea, or even just a vibe, and I help turn it into a full song — with structured lyrics, a strong topline, and sometimes a vocal demo (guide vocal). I also offer multilingual adaptations, allowing clients to reach new audiences while keeping the emotional depth of their song. My work is collaborative, fast, and always focused on authenticity and originality.
