Interview with ValerioCuccurullo
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That one can make music even without studying
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Unfortunately, I don't know anyone on soundbetter at the moment, but I hope to soon find many professionals with whom I can share passes and work
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Space a lot between pop and cinematic/orchestral music. I can move seamlessly between genres, thanks to the experience I have gained over the years.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I generally compose and produce a song from scratch, but I am always open to collaborations with musicians or other composers: music is made together :)
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My last job. was a documentary where I had to rewrite the music and work a lot on the voices because they were very damaged. It took me a long time but the result was amazing. I was very proud of this project.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on the music and post-production of a documentary for television networks.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Although I have analogue machines in my studio, I prefer digital. Digital allows me to be more precise in my work, and therefore to get the result I want.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Whatever your job requirement, it will be done with passion and the best possible quality.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The result. I love it when after many hours of work you hear an idea turn into sound.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The thing they asked me most often in the last few jobs I did was whether it was possible to clean their voices perfectly. No problem :)
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I would ask them to describe their project in detail: if they have references, preferences and what their needs are.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Tell me about your project in as much detail as possible so that we can create an understanding to achieve the best possible result.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Nuendo, Kontakt, pigments, my headphones and my PC
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started when I was about 18 years old. After taking a 2-year course to become a sound technician, I started producing music. I started working for sony music and this allowed me to produce music for several international artists. I later graduated from the conserservatory in “electronic music.” I continued my studies by specializing in "composition and sound design for audiovisual and video games." From there I opened my own studio and also started working for audiovisual companies producing documentaries, films, series, etc.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: It would be maglifico to be able to work with artists like hans zimmer: his level of experimentation regarding music is very high. I think that always experimenting and bringing new ideas to the world is crucial.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: My advice is to do!!! Only by doing, experimenting and studying can results be achieved. Theory is important, am once learned you have to put it into practice.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: From soundtracks to pop and dance genre productions. My musical background allows me to be extremely elastic, and to range, experiment and contaminate on different musical genres.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Composition and post-production. I love creating music from scratch and making it sound as clean and quality as possible.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: As far as I am concerned, the first step and most important thing is to talk with the client to best understand his or her needs and requirements. Once I understand what the client is looking for, I get to work! My approach varies greatly depending on the type of work, but the goal is unique: to achieve top-notch quality!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: The studio is divided into two spaces: the control room and the recording room. The control room is equipped with ATMOS technology. The Atmos listening set consists of “Audio Factory as29,” very high quality speakers. I have a sound card “antelope orion studio synergy core” with which I manage the whole sound system. Also in the control room I have several external Hardware such as an Avalon 737, a goldmike MK2 and a focusrite isa 828 mkii. In the recording room there are many musical instruments and many bass and guitar amplifiers. Also this room is used for foley and sound design recording, podcast recording and dubbing.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am influenced by many musical genres and artists: from pop, dance, to film and orchestral music. I have a large catalog of music that I refer to and listen to, and it spans many genres. I think there has to be a good balance between identity and musical contamination.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Over the years I have performed many services related to audio and music: for a long time I was a ghost producer, producing music for international artists. Later I specialized in audio for audiovisual products, so I started working with audiovisual companies, offering services such as: music composition, sound design, post-production, and mixing from stereo to ATMOS
