Interview with Bruno Gallardo
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of involved collaborating with a Latin jazz ensemble to produce an album that blended traditional rhythms with contemporary jazz harmonies. My role was multifaceted — I contributed as a guitarist, arranger, and co-producer. I helped craft intricate guitar parts that complemented the ensemble’s dynamic, arranged several tracks to enhance the overall flow, and worked closely with the artists to capture authentic performances in the studio. What made this project particularly rewarding was the creative synergy and the challenge of balancing complexity with accessibility. The final album received positive feedback for its musicality and production quality, and it pushed me to grow both technically and artistically.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now, I’m involved in several exciting projects across different genres. I’m recording and producing guitar tracks for a few jazz and Latin artists, working on arrangements that blend traditional and modern sounds. I’m also composing original material that explores the intersection of jazz, soul, and R&B. Additionally, I’m developing new content to share on my social media channels to connect with fellow musicians and potential clients.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: While I value and respect many talented professionals on SoundBetter, I tend to recommend providers based on the specific needs of each project. It’s important to find collaborators whose style and expertise align closely with the artist’s vision. I’m always happy to connect clients with colleagues I’ve worked with personally or who come highly recommended within my network to ensure the best possible outcome.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I believe both analog and digital tools have their unique strengths, and the best approach is often a blend of the two. Analog gear brings warmth, character, and a certain organic quality to recordings that can be difficult to replicate digitally. On the other hand, digital tools offer incredible flexibility, precision, and convenience—especially in editing, layering, and mixing. In my work, I use analog pedals and amps to capture authentic guitar tones and textures, while relying on digital plugins and DAWs like Pro Tools for detailed processing and efficient workflow. Combining analog warmth with digital precision allows me to deliver polished, professional results that retain musicality and feel.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to every client is to deliver high-quality, expressive guitar performances and productions that serve your vision and elevate your music. I commit to clear communication, timely delivery, and openness to revisions to ensure the final result meets or exceeds your expectations. Above all, I approach every project with dedication, professionalism, and a genuine passion for helping your music shine.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I like most about my job is the opportunity to express creativity and connect emotionally through music. Being able to bring ideas to life—whether it’s crafting the perfect guitar line, shaping the mood of a song, or helping an artist realize their vision—is incredibly fulfilling. I love the challenge of adapting to different styles and collaborating with other musicians and producers. Every project is a new journey, and that constant learning and growth keeps my passion alive.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What guitars do you use? I work with a variety of high-quality guitars, including Fender Stratocaster, Yamaha SA1000, Ibanez PM200, Gibson Les Paul, and Ibanez MMN1. This variety allows me to cover a wide range of tones and styles, from jazz to rock and everything in between. What’s your recording setup like? I record using an Audient iD44 interface, Pro Tools as my DAW, and a selection of microphones including the Shure SM7B, SM58, and Rode NT1. For tone shaping, I use analog pedals, the Line 6 HX Stomp, and Neural DSP plugins to create rich, dynamic guitar sounds. How do you deliver your work? I provide high-quality WAV files, either dry or processed depending on your needs, fully edited and ready to integrate into your project. I’m happy to offer revisions to ensure you’re completely satisfied. Can you adapt to different genres? Absolutely. My background in jazz and experience across soul, R&B, funk, Latin, pop, and more gives me the versatility to create guitar parts that fit seamlessly into many styles.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: One of the biggest misconceptions about what I do is that playing guitar or producing music is just about technical skill or simply “playing notes.” In reality, it’s much more than that — it’s about serving the song, understanding the emotional context, and making creative choices that enhance the overall production. Being a session guitarist and producer requires deep musicality, sensitivity to the arrangement, and the ability to adapt quickly to different styles and artists’ needs. It’s an art and a craft that blends technique, creativity, and collaboration.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: When working with new clients, I like to ask questions that help me fully understand their vision and needs. Some of the key questions I usually ask include: -What is the style or genre of the song/project? -Do you have any reference tracks or specific guitar tones in mind? -What role do you want the guitar parts to play in the arrangement (rhythm, lead, texture, fills)? -Are there any specific techniques or moods you want to capture? -What is the intended use of the final recordings (demo, commercial release, live performance backing)? -What is your timeline and preferred format for delivery? -Are you open to revisions and feedback during the process? These questions help me tailor my work to fit your vision perfectly and deliver results that exceed expectations.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: When hiring a music provider, it’s important to look for someone who not only has technical skill but also truly understands and respects your artistic vision. Communication is key—make sure to share clear references, your goals, and any specific ideas you have. A great collaborator listens carefully, adapts to your style, and brings creative solutions that enhance your music without overpowering it. Don’t hesitate to ask for samples or demos to get a sense of their tone and feel, and choose a provider who is professional, reliable, and open to revisions. Ultimately, the right provider will make you feel confident that your music is in good hands and will help bring your vision to life with authenticity and quality.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. My laptop, for production, recording, and mixing anywhere. 2. My Ibanez MMN1, an incredibly versatile guitar that covers a wide range of tones and styles. 3. Line 6 HX Stomp, a powerful multi-effects processor and amp modeler to shape any sound. 4. Audio-Technica M50x headphones, which provide accurate monitoring for critical listening and mixing. 5. Gibson Les Paul, for its rich, full-bodied tone that suits many genres.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been playing guitar and working professionally as a musician, producer, and arranger for over [X] years. My journey began with a deep passion for jazz, which gave me a strong foundation in harmony, improvisation, and musical expression. Over time, I expanded my skills into other genres like soul, R&B, funk, Latin, and pop, adapting my playing and production techniques to serve a wide variety of musical projects. Throughout my career, I’ve collaborated with many artists and producers, constantly learning and evolving. Today, I combine my performance experience with studio production skills to deliver high-quality guitar tracks and creative arrangements tailored to each client’s vision.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style blends jazz sensibility, melodic improvisation, and rhythmic versatility with a modern, polished approach. I like to combine the warmth and expressiveness of classic jazz guitar with elements from soul, R&B, funk, Latin, and pop, adapting my tone and technique to suit each project. Whether playing intricate chord voicings, smooth leads, or groove-driven comping, my goal is always to serve the song with taste, feeling, and precision.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Kiko Cibrián because he is a masterful jazz player, producer, arranger, and composer — roles I deeply identify with and strive to excel in myself. His ability to blend sophisticated jazz harmonies with accessible, modern production inspires me tremendously. Collaborating with someone of his caliber would be an incredible opportunity to learn, grow, and contribute creatively at the highest level.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One music production tip I always share is: arrange with intention — leave space. Great productions aren’t about filling every moment with sound; they’re about choosing the right parts that support the emotion and structure of the song. Every instrument should have a purpose and a place in the mix. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can add... is knowing when not to play.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on a wide range of styles, but most of my projects revolve around jazz, soul, R&B, pop, funk, Latin, and singer-songwriter music. My background in jazz gives me a strong foundation in harmony, rhythm, and improvisation, which I adapt to fit each genre authentically. Whether it’s recording guitars for a soulful ballad, arranging for a Latin-infused track, or producing clean, tasteful parts for a modern pop song, I always focus on serving the music with clarity, intention, and groove.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: One of my strongest skills is my improvisation ability — not just in a technical sense, but in how I react musically and emotionally in the moment. Years of playing jazz and working across multiple genres have taught me to listen deeply, adapt quickly, and create parts that feel natural and expressive. Whether it’s crafting a solo, adding subtle fills, or building textures on the fly, improvisation allows me to bring spontaneity and musicality to every project — always in service of the song.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: What I bring to a song is a deep musical sensibility, a refined sense of tone, and the ability to serve the composition with intention and respect. My focus is always on enhancing the song — understanding its emotional core and adding guitar parts that support the arrangement, elevate the production, and contribute to the overall narrative. With a background in jazz and experience across a wide range of styles — from soul and pop to Latin and R&B — I offer versatility, precision, and taste. My role is not simply to play the instrument, but to listen carefully, interpret the music’s needs, and deliver guitar work that integrates seamlessly into the sonic landscape of the track.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process begins by carefully listening to your song, reference track, or demo to fully understand the style, mood, and specific guitar needs you're aiming for. I pay close attention to your notes and always keep communication open to ensure we're on the same page creatively. Once I understand your vision, I choose the right guitar and gear combination to match the sound — whether that’s a Strat, Les Paul, semi-hollow, or nylon string — and dial in the tone using real amps, analog pedals, the Line 6 HX Stomp, or plugins like Neural DSP. From there, I record clean, musical, and expressive takes tailored to your track — whether you need rhythm guitars, leads, textures, fills, or all of the above. I focus on groove, tone, and dynamics to deliver a performance that feels alive and sits naturally in the mix. Once the recording is done, I deliver fully edited, high-quality WAV files — either dry or processed, depending on your preference. Revisions are always welcome to make sure the final result fits your song perfectly. Let’s make your track shine with guitars that truly serve the music.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: 🎸 Studio Setup I record through Pro Tools using an Audient iD44 interface and a selection of high-end guitars, including: Fender Stratocaster Yamaha SA1000 (335-style) Ibanez PM200 (ES-175 style) Gibson Les Paul Ibanez MMN1 (modern Strat-style) This variety gives me access to both single coils and humbuckers, making it easy to cover a wide range of genres — from jazz, pop, funk, soul, R&B, rock to Latin styles. I use a combination of analog pedals (overdrives, modulation, delays, reverbs), Neural DSP plugins, and the Line 6 HX Stomp to shape the right tone for each track. For amps, I work with a DV Mark Little Jazz, Fender Pro Jr, and Fender Deluxe Reverb, depending on the sound you're after. Microphones include the Shure SM7B, SM58, and Rode NT1 — ensuring clarity and warmth for both mic’d amps and acoustic recordings. Let’s make your track sound alive with real, expressive guitar work tailored to your vision.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I'm inspired by musicians who combine technical mastery with deep emotional expression. Guitarists like Pat Metheny, Pasquale Grasso, and Jonathan Kreisberg have shaped my approach to jazz guitar, while players like Kiko Cibrian and Paul Jackson Jr inspire me with their versatility and tone across genres. On the production side, I look up to creatives like Quincy Jones, Jacob Collier, and Tom Misch for their ability to blend styles, arrange with taste, and bring out the best in artists. I’m also constantly inspired by the musicians I collaborate with — each project brings new perspectives that help me grow as both a guitarist and a producer.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: As a guitarist and music producer, the most common type of work I do for clients includes recording high-quality guitar tracks — both rhythm and lead — tailored to fit the style and emotional tone of their songs. I often create full guitar arrangements, adding textures, fills, and harmonies that elevate the production.
