Interview with Lu Phesz
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My first production collaboration. A friend of a friend turned out to be a talented rapper. The project as now gained over 6k streams on Soundcloud.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently I am working on my EP Indie Rock style and I have put a lot of work into it. My band is also soon to record a EP. We play regularly locally.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No one yet as I am brand new. Though would love to connect with other artists whether it's vocalists, instrumentalists or producers.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog all day. I have access to a lot of great studios via my ties to my collage, and I have to say analog sounds more natural. However, I also like digital. There's an art form in it alone.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I want all my clients to be satisfied. I promise a quick time service of not more than 3 days (if per track). Constant communication (as it is key for me) and A Guaranteed Money Back if the service is not up to the artists' standards.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I just love creative and working with people. Making something out of nothing is the biggest boost I can have. Very Therapeutic as well.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do you have autotune. A lot of artists I've worked with ask this and the answer is yes. That and Melodyne.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I am more than a beat maker. I can create fully produced, radio ready songs. I also mix and master!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I would very much like to work with artists as serious as I am in my craft. There's plenty of other artists that are unaware of how advantageous collaboration is in music. We all deserve what we get from a piece art.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Ask as often as you can. This is ultimately the artists songs, so I love as much feedback as possible. Don't be scared to share either. We're all creatives doing something a lot of people wish they could do.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My acoustic guitar! My laptop (dead or alive) Headphones and a media player MIDI keyboard Book and pen
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've always wanted to make music. I wrote my first song when I was 13 and started uploading my music in 2017. I've accumulated more than 100k listens on Soundcloud and after a break due to my education (which was spent at a sound engineering school) I now embark on my next music journey.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: 90s inspired. I also think my music sits well with today's music as they seems to be a resurgence with guitar focused music. I like raw instrumental music and that resonates well into what I do.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Ed Sheeran. Besides him being a role model of mine, I love the way he collaborates with other artists. I also like the way he blends genres together.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don't get stuck on the loop. There's varies of ways to get beyond that. I would try improvising with the loop then extracting it. I've finished a lot of my songs that way.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I play for a metal band, but I've worked on plenty of genres. I started with EDM and trip hop then, boom bap then hip hop, and now mostly pop oriented rock. I enjoy indie music mostly but comfortable with most genres as I've had formal education in music production.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Collaborating with other artist to achieve what their vision of a song or project is. I love getting into what the artist likes, who they like, their vision, their goal and ultimately their vision.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Just to bring it life. I aim to take even the basic of ideas into something worth working on again. Full production would be my specialty but also helping the artist reach a progressive creative point where I've seen many fails. Collaboration is key.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually start with drums. Then after that just fiddle really, obviously keeping theory and dynamics in mind. I play all the instruments with no samples.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Just about above average. Two laptops, one usually runs Ableton. 2 electric guitars, one acoustic, 2 bass guitars, 2 keyboards, SE electronics microphone, Orange bass amp, Blackstar guitar amp, Yamaha headphones with JBL speakers. Quite comfy space with good head room, dedicated to it
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I look up to Rick Rubin a lot. Mainly for his versatility but also creativity he added to all the great records he's worked on. I also like the Gorillaz, partly for their style of version. Musically I mostly listen to Metal, Britpop, Hiphop, Pop, RnB and some Country lately
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: In the recent past I've mixed quite a lot of music from indie artists. Hip hop to be exact due to the popularity at the time. However, I've had mixed live bands and also do have expertise in mixing life cut music.
