Interview with Josh Howth

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I’m especially proud of “Hollow.” I wrote, produced, performed, mixed, and mastered the entire track. It blends emotional storytelling with warm vocal layers and a cinematic arrangement that fully represents my style.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m developing new singles for my own project and producing tracks for artists looking for soulful vocals and acoustic-driven arrangements.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not at the moment.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital, because it lets me work quickly, experiment freely, and deliver clean, modern productions anywhere in the world.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I deliver emotionally honest music and clear, consistent communication from start to finish.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: Helping artists turn an idea or emotion into something real and unforgettable.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: “Can you match this artist’s sound?” Yes. I can adapt to references while adding a unique and authentic touch that fits your identity.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That producing a song is only about technical skills. It’s really about translating emotion into sound and building a world around the artist’s voice.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I ask for musical references, the emotion they want to convey, their vocal range, and what the final goal of the project is (demo, release, pitch, etc.).

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Choose someone who listens, not just someone with skills. A great collaboration starts with communication and understanding your artistic identity.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Cubase Pro, Rode NT1-A, Steinberg UR22 mkII, AKG K702, and my acoustic guitar.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I studied Songwriting at Saint Louis College of Music in Rome, along with voice, piano, production, and guitar. I’ve been writing and producing my own music for years and now help other artists shape their sound professionally.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Warm, soulful, and storytelling-driven. I blend acoustic textures with modern pop and R&B influences.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Ed Sheeran. Because of his melodic sensibility and the emotional honesty in his songs. I feel our styles would blend naturally.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: If your vocals sound dull or muddy, reduce the low-mids before boosting the highs. Cleaning space almost always sounds more natural than adding sparkle.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Mostly Pop, R&B/Soul, Singer-Songwriter, and Acoustic/Folk-inspired productions.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Melodic intuition and emotional vocal delivery. I’m also highly versatile across genres while keeping a cohesive artistic identity.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Emotion, clarity, and intention. I focus on storytelling and vocal expression, making sure every melody and word feels alive and connected to the listener.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start by understanding the artist’s vision and references. Then I create a topline or instrumental foundation, record vocals, and build the arrangement. Once approved, I move into mixing and mastering to deliver a polished, release-ready track.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work in a treated home studio centered around Cubase Pro 11. My main chain includes a Rode NT1-A, Steinberg UR22 mkII interface, AKG K702 headphones, and a variety of virtual instruments and stock plug-ins. It’s a clean, efficient setup designed for clarity and vocal warmth.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by artists who blend musicality with strong storytelling: Ed Sheeran, Jacob Collier, D’Angelo, and the production approach of Quincy Jones.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I usually write toplines, lyrics, and record male vocals with a warm, soulful tone. I also produce full tracks from scratch for artists who need a complete, radio-ready song.
