Interview with Ruben Valenz

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: My favorite project is my song 1IE 2 M3. it's funny, playful, and relatable. I had originally created it for a female artist who I made a few songs for her EP. She didn't end up purchasing it because she felt her project was complete without it and wanted to stick to 10 tracks rather than 11.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am currently producing songs for whomever and releasing the ones that aren't sold. I will be creating an EP for next year to add to my discography

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I just joined this I'm still learning how to use this website.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital! Less wires easy portability.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: I promise I will make sure your song tells the story you want it to tell.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I like that I cam make my own hours. I love hearing all the new voices and ideas that I'd never imagine of creating myself it's amazing.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: I usually get asked if it takes a week long because most of their projects were a week per track. Everyone is different I can't personally speak on others. I say give me 24 hours just to be safe rarely I ask for 2 days.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: Thinking I will make you're voice irresistible. I will tune your voice if necessary but I can't give you vocal lessons. I can however add my own vocals to give it some extra sauce.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What is your budget? What services do you need? What's the time frame?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Make sure you know what your budget is. There's nothing more heartbreaking then turning away a client do to insufficient funds. I'm negotiable I'm always will to work with my customers. Just make sure going in to it you have a price point so you're not wasting your time and adding unnecessary stress on yourself.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Solar battery charger my phone and my microphone and some good headphones to mix on my phone. I could easy get lost in music and let time slip away.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've always had music as a side job since 2014. I started writing as a ghost writer for a lot of sound cloud rappers in the bay area. I didn't start recording my own vocals and music until 2018. This year I've officially release a few of my songs that weren't selling I figured they'd be good to at least be used for a discography.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is very laid back and chill I like to make people smile I love positive energy.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with leona lewis her vocal technique is different than most artists. She's one of the few artist to incorporate a yodel technique especially when she switching from chest voice to falsetto.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Don't stress yourself out focusing on one song. Close it off for the day and start something else for the emotions you're feeling in that moment. Go back to the other song when ur back in that head space and finish it.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I work on all types of music. Rap was my first genre but I believe there is always room for growth so I start to do more pop and Rnb.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Mixing and layering vocals is my strongest skill mainly because I find it easy, fun and quick.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring clarity and overall amazing quality. It's easy to get carried away with wanting to add and add to a track but sometimes it drowns out the message or the emotions behind the voice.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Typically I like to know what story is the song telling. Make sure you follow the who/what, why and how pattern. I.e the blue sky. Always makes me cry. It fades away at night.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I've used my mbox interface set up with my standard mic for most of my recordings. logic pro or pro tools for mixing generally as well. However the cheaper alternative that I've been enjoying is bandlab it's extremely easy to use and I don't have to worry about my battery draining.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: May be shocking but my main inspiration for music are artists like leona lewis, sza, neyo, usher, Brian McKnight, Joe. I like the poetry writing style behind the music of RnB. I mainly grew up on rap and hiphop but RnB has been a huge inspiration to my rap verses.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I generally mix and write as a ghost writer for clients ideally I'd like to find one artist to continually work with as a ghost writer. I don't mind recording vocals when needed.
