Interview with Mariah Geer

  1. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  2. A: Look for someone who doesn’t just check technical boxes, but actually gets your vision. Skill matters, of course—but so does chemistry, communication, and emotional intuition. You want someone who listens well, cares about the heart behind your music, and will treat your project like it actually means something (because it does). Don’t be afraid to ask questions, share your story, and trust your gut—it’s better to hire someone who aligns with your voice than someone chasing trends.

  3. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  4. A: If I were stuck on a desert island with just five pieces of gear, I’d bring my acoustic guitar, laptop, interface, condenser mic, and headphones. Not exactly a luxury studio, but I’ve made great music with far less. Honestly, give me a quiet room, a decent mic, and some emotional damage—I’ll make it work ;)

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I taught myself guitar around age 10 and wrote my first song soon after. Music has always been my way to express myself and connect deeply with life. Throughout middle and high school, I led worship at my church while fronting a pop punk band and later pursuing a solo project that included a short tour. Making bedroom recordings as a teen was my form of therapy and creative release. After becoming a mom, I continued writing and collaborating with other songwriters while balancing family life. I took my passion further by studying full-stack production and was hired as a songwriter at Songfinch. I recorded a worship album in my bedroom studio and gradually built a producing career, working with clients who value authenticity and heart. My goal is to make this my full-time career and create a studio that’s more than just a space—a safe haven where artists can dive deep, be vulnerable, and come out with something raw, true, and beautifully authentic.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: My style is rooted in raw emotion and honest storytelling, blending indie folk and acoustic pop with lush, textured production. It’s intimate and vulnerable, yet polished and intentional—crafting songs that feel both personal and universally relatable. I focus on creating melodies and arrangements that carry emotional weight and invite listeners into a deeply authentic experience.

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: I’m drawn to artists who value honest storytelling and emotional depth in their music—those unafraid to be vulnerable and raw. I love collaborating with musicians who create intimate, authentic sounds and are passionate about crafting songs that truly resonate. I’m equally excited to work with artists pushing creative boundaries and exploring new sonic landscapes with intention and heart. For me, the most rewarding collaborations come from a shared commitment to creating meaningful, impactful music.

  11. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  12. A: Be true to yourself. If a sound or idea resonates with you, hold onto it. Comparison is the enemy of creativity—trying to imitate others often leads to feeling stuck and uninspired. True artistry comes from diving deep within your own soul and offering a unique perspective on the world around you. When you embrace your authentic voice, you create music that’s truly worth listening to.

  13. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  14. A: typically work on intimate, emotionally-driven music that blends elements of indie folk, acoustic pop, and singer-songwriter styles. My songs often focus on honest storytelling, vulnerability, and raw human experience, wrapped in thoughtful arrangements and warm, organic production. Whether writing, producing, or mastering, I aim to create music that feels authentic, heartfelt, and deeply relatable.

  15. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  16. A: My strongest skill lies in translating genuine emotion into compelling songs. Beyond heartfelt lyrics and melodies, I bring technical expertise in arrangement, production, and mastering that shapes each track into a polished, professional work. This combination allows me to create music that’s both deeply authentic and sonically captivating, connecting with listeners on every level.

  17. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  18. A: I bring a deep sense of honesty and quiet emotion that breathes life into every note and word. I don’t just write lyrics or melodies—I help tell stories that matter, weaving raw feeling and careful intention into songs that linger long after they end. With a producer’s ear and a storyteller’s heart, I shape songs that feel both intimate and expansive—holding space for vulnerability and strength alike. Above all, I bring care and a commitment to creating music that truly moves people.

  19. Q: What's your typical work process?

  20. A: My work process is always tailored to each client and project, ensuring that your vision stays front and center. I start by getting to know you and your goals—whether that’s writing heartfelt lyrics, crafting melodies, or producing a full track. From there, I map out a plan that fits the scope of your project and our timeline. Because I’m also a mom juggling family life, I prioritize clear communication and realistic deadlines, so we can collaborate smoothly without stress. Flexibility is key—I’m committed to delivering authentic, high-quality music that truly reflects you, while honoring the rhythms of my own life.

  21. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  22. A: I work out of a cozy, dedicated bedroom studio that’s been my creative home for years. While my setup may be modest compared to big commercial studios, I’ve spent countless hours honing my craft here, producing music I’m truly proud of. My focus is always on capturing the emotion and authenticity of your song with care and professionalism. With my trained ear and full-stack production skills, I deliver polished, heartfelt results—proving that great music comes from passion and skill, not just fancy gear.

  23. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  24. A: Growing up in the pop punk and rock scene, I was deeply drawn to the true grit and raw emotion of bands like Paramore, Anberlin, The Rocket Summer, Taking Back Sunday, Manchester Orchestra, Death Cab for Cutie, and Jack’s Mannequin. These early influences laid the foundation for my passion for honest, emotive music that tells real stories. In recent years, I’ve found inspiration in the raw, intimate songwriting and collaborative spirit of Boygenius — Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julien Baker — who blend vulnerability with powerful musicianship and production. I also admire the lush, textured sounds of Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon, the vibrant creativity of Jack Antonoff, and the dynamic, genre-blending soundscapes crafted by George Daniel and Matty Healy of The 1975, alongside producer Mike Crossey. Ethan Gruska’s sensitive, artful work on Ryan Beatty’s latest record has profoundly shaped how I approach storytelling and sonic detail. At the heart of it all, I’m most drawn to whatever moves me musically or lyrically. For me, it’s always about careful intent—crafting songs that resonate with authenticity and meaning, no matter the genre or style.

  25. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  26. A: I most often help artists bring their stories to life through heartfelt songwriting and production. Whether it’s crafting honest lyrics, writing memorable melodies, or producing a full track that captures their unique vibe, I focus on creating music that feels authentic and emotionally true. Clients come to me for my ability to translate real emotions into songs with care, professionalism, and a collaborative spirit. From writing custom songs to mastering the final mix, I guide projects from initial idea to polished release-ready tracks — all while honoring the artist’s voice and vision.
