Interview with Jason Fullerton

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: Right now, I’m collaborating with an established artist on her next album. I’m handling production and mix work, helping bring her vision to life while keeping the sound fresh and emotionally honest.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both. Digital gives me surgical control; analog (real or emulated) brings warmth, unpredictability, and character. The sweet spot is often somewhere in the middle.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: I’ll treat your song with care, creativity, and precision and I won’t stop until it feels right.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: Helping artists cross the finish line with confidence. There’s nothing like hearing someone say, “This is better than how I imagined it could be!”

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: 1. MacBook with Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and Pro Tools — my full creative and technical toolkit in one machine. 2. A pair of headphones I trust — essential for precision when monitors aren’t available. 3. A MIDI controller with knobs and faders — for hands-on control and staying in the creative flow. 4. Shure SM7B microphone — ultra-reliable, works beautifully for vocals, guitars, and even ambient recordings. 5. An acoustic guitar — because inspiration often starts with a simple melody and a quiet moment.

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: I’ve been making music in some form since I was a kid. First as a performer, then a producer, and now as a full-on engineer. I’ve been focused on professional mixing and mastering for several years now, and every project sharpens my ear even more.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I wish I could have been an engineer on Fleetwood Mac's Rumors album. The album still raises the hair on my arms.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Your mix isn’t done when it sounds good, it’s done when it feels right. Reference your song at very low volume; if it still emotionally connects, you're on the right track.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: I gravitate toward electronic, cinematic, rock, and hybrid genres, but I’ve worked across everything from pop-country to EDM to atmospheric indie. If it’s emotionally compelling or rhythmically interesting, I’m in.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Translating intention into sound. I can hear where something wants to go and help get it there with clarity, energy, and impact.

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: A sense of dynamics, emotion, and space. I make songs hit harder, feel deeper, and translate better across systems without ever losing their identity.

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: I start by listening, not just to the music, but to the artist. I want to understand what the song means to them. From there, I’ll either mix from scratch or polish an existing mix, always referencing the emotional intent. Communication and clarity are key; I want the final result to feel like you, just enhanced.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I work in a hybrid studio powered by macOS and Ableton Live, alongside Logic Pro and Pro Tools when needed. I use a wide array of premium plugins and high-end monitoring to ensure every detail translates. My setup is clean, fast, and designed to minimize distractions so I can stay locked into the creative flow.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: The Cars, The Prodigy, Nine Inch Nails, and The Crystal Method have had a huge influence on me. Not just musically, but in how they craft immersive, high-impact sonic worlds. On the production side, people like Trent Reznor, Roy Thomas Baker, Alan Moulder, and Rick Rubin inspire me with their clarity of vision and ability to bring out the best in every sound.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: I specialize in mixing and mastering raw or semi-polished tracks and helping them reach their full sonic potential. Whether it’s a cinematic electronic piece, an indie ballad, or a gritty club banger, I make sure the energy and emotion of the song are fully realized.
