Interview with Shaun Thompson

  1. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  2. A: I want to know more about the artist and what their song means to them. Nothing is worse then a Engineer who works like a factory. I want to get to know my client and feel what they feel when they talk about their song.

  3. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  4. A: Organization is key to making a clean and successful track. Havin all of your stems ready with notes on the direction you want your song to go is already setting you up for good experience.

  5. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  6. A: Matches, Water Filter, IPOD shuffle, Large Blanket, Beer

  7. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  8. A: I originally was going to college for a major in Computer Science and IT, however I've now been doing all things music for 3+ years now.

  9. Q: How would you describe your style?

  10. A: I have a very crisp and airy style to my mixes and I prefer a melodic tone to my personal music.

  11. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  12. A: I hope I get the chance to work with The Kid Laroi some day.

  13. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  14. A: Less is more. Nothing is worse than a vocal bus with 20+ effects layered on top of it.

  15. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  16. A: I work on mostly Hip-Hop and Pop tracks. I have experience however mixing singer-songwriter and folk acoustic songs.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: My strongest skill is definitely having the experience of being an artist myself and understanding the passion behind every song a client brings my way. I've sat in my studio for countless hours trying to learn how to obtain certain sounds and aspects of my own music. I hope to now share that with other artists in the near future.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: I bring years of mixing experience that I've gained from doing all of the legwork on my own songs in order to build a small fanbase that has allowed me to perform as numerous shows around New Jersey.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: I like to work early and quickly. I prefer to get a quality and finished product to the client as quickly as possible to have as much time for possible revisions if needed.

  23. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  24. A: I have a small studio setup in the basement of my home. I use FL Studio as my main DAW and I have two KALI monitors to help me listen to tracks post mix.

  25. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  26. A: A particular artist by the name of "Brakence" really inspires me as far as creativity and vision.

  27. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  28. A: My most common client is looking for an overall better mix of a song they have recently recorded or have had for a long time.
