I work as a Creative Director at a german agency. We produce different kind of films, e.g. imagefilms, documentaries, PR and more.
Since 2024, we are booking Ramon for several productions (including some tv commercials) as a sound designer and mixing engineer. He helped us fixing noisy sound recordings and mixed/mastered sound design with great quality and the needed loudness requirements for our costumers.
He works quickly and has enough technical experience for many creative solutions.

I was the editor for the nominated short film "BARAN-The Last Rain" by a german/iranian director.
Ramon provided the music production for the whole short film within a short time period and an great sound quality. He perfectly brought the vision of the writers for the short film to life, outperforming everyones expectations.
With the same creative quality he also composed and produced the trailer music for "BARAN" by adding so much drama and suspense to the trailer.
Ramon is very easy and uncomplicated to work with.
I whole heartedly recommend Ramon as a composer and music producer!

Interview with Ramón Gonzalez

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I wrote the music for the livestream of the biggest German broadcaster called WDR. I loved the working process, because I could write romantic orchestral music with japanese influences, since it was about a big japanese festival in Germany. I wrote the music for the firework, right at the finale of the festival - I only got a plan about the duration of each explosion, that was my only information for syncing my music to it. It was a hell of a challenge, but it turned out pretty well and was just so much fun!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I am writing three pieces for cello and piano where I am playing myself. Recording day is at the end of april... I need to practise!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Unfortunately no, I am not that familiar with other SoundBetter producers.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: A nearly impossible question for me to answer, because I love both worlds. But if I have to decide, I might chose analog, simply because you need other people to get to a final result - so sharing a creative process is something that is really important to me. I don´t want to miss that.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: High quality sounding and structural working, they know my steps well because I keep communicating them.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: That it´s never the same. It keeps changing and being challenging, which makes it so much more rewarding getting a project done.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Boring answer, but honestly, it´s always about the time I need to finish the music. And my answer is mostly a time frame, depending the effort for the project.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That there is one formular on how to approach specific types of music. Productions in general about the same topics, genre, instruments or what ever, can be done so rapidly different - it´s never the exact same way as maybe a project before of writing or producing music for me.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: It really depends on the job. Usually I ask more about the story they want to tell. I want to know about perspectives, relevant emotions etc. that can draw me a picture.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be open to new musical ideas you didn´t think about in the first place. If you hire a pro, he or she really wants to push to new grounds together. If you let them try out, you might end up with something much more valuable because of the synergy you created together.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My piano, computer, audio interface, one mic and my headphones. I think I could manage to get old on that island then.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started composing music for short films from film students when I was around 22, which lead to studying at the Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf, Germany, where I got my Bachelor of Music degree. I worked for academy award winning composer Volker Bertelmann among other producers.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Romantic with a little bit of jazz.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Musicians who are in need of songwriting, arrangement, mixing and/or mastering. Filmmakers in need of a score. Productions companies, who need recordings or mixes for ads.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Produce your own samples. It doesn´t have to be with expensive equipment, but your own sound comes with your own recordings and learning from mistakes while producing them.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Orchestral and Pop music

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I think I am best at creating a hook, a humable melody, lines that stick to your head for a long time. I am convinced that melody trumps every other aspect of music production since people still listen to productions from the 50s and earlier with much less production quality than today: but the melodies of those records still work today!

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I can merge many different influences, music theory concepts and genres in a coherent and fresh sounding experience. I dive into traditional japenese music, to get new ideas for orchestral pieces, or research concepts of quintal and quartal harmony in jazz theory, to spice up the chords of a funk piece - so many ingredients to explore!

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I either am writing a sketch on my piano or start to create a own sound template in Cubase, depending on whether I am concentrating on the sonic environment or the musical hook first. Communication is key, so I decide my next steps by talking with my clients about the music, so I get a better understanding of arrangement, genre, speed and timing of the music. After taking notes from the conversations I had, I am producing a first demo for the client to listen to and to give me feedback.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work at a measured and calibrated home studio equipped with multiple acoustic panels, selected to reach my prefered listening environment. My gear contains the Hedd Type 07 MK2 monitors, the RME fireface 802 as audio interface and I record mostly with AKG C414 XLii and/or Schoeps MK2 microphones. My ryzen 9 high end pc is my basis for working on Cubase or ProTools containing a huge amount of libraries and vst instruments from Spitfire, Native Instruments, Cinesamples and many more.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: John Williams, Thomas Newman, Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre and Timbaland to name just the most inspiring composers and producers.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most requested work I get from my clients is to create a piece from scratch, mostly for media like feature films for example. I write the score, record myself on the piano or instrumentalists myself and finally mix and master everything to an entertaining end result.
