Interview with Sj Van Damme Vlad Shpakovskiy
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My Dear City' (2025): - My role: Writer, vocalist, producer. - Key details: Recorded one-handed, mixed in my home studio. - Achievement: Beatport Top 10—the first Belarusian artist with cerebral palsy to do it. - Philosophy: Proved physical limits aren’t barriers, just a unique style.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: My debut album for Exist in Sound (8 tracks, including a collab with an American producer).
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet—I’m new here. But my label, Exist in Sound (Reza), is a great choice for trance production.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital. My Focusrite and plugins deliver the same clarity as expensive analog gear, but without bulky equipment. For an artist with disabilities, that’s freedom.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: 1. No fluff—just honest deadlines and results. 2. You’ll get a draft within 48 hours. 3. Free revisions within the original scope.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That moment when a client says, 'This is exactly what I imagined!' Plus, smashing stereotypes: 'A guy in a wheelchair can’t make serious music'—well, guess what? He can.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: 'You have cerebral palsy—can you record clean vocals?' A: 'My condition only affects my legs and vision. My voice and hearing are 100%—here are my demo recordings.' Q: 'Why are you cheaper than studio vocalists?' A: 'I save on rent, not quality. Lower price, same results.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That 'home studio = low quality.' My Top 10 Beatport track was recorded in my apartment—skills and ears matter more than gear.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: 1. What genre/mood are you aiming for? Any reference tracks? 2. Who is your target audience? 3. Do you have specific lyrics/melody ideas? 4. Is this for commercial release or personal enjoyment? 5. What’s your budget and timeline?"
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: 1. Describe the emotions you want, not just technical specs ('I want a track that gives me chills,' not 'I need vocals at 128 BPM'). 2. Don’t judge a studio by its gear—my Top 10 Beatport track was recorded with a $60 HyperX mic. 3. Trust the process—if I ask for details, it’s to deliver the best result.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A laptop with FL Studio, an Arturia KeyLab Essential MIDI controller, a Focusrite Solo audio interface, Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones, and a solar panel—because even a genius can’t work without power!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Psychologist → musician: - 2014: Slavianski Bazaar winner - 2017: First releases - 2021: YEISKOMP Records - 2024: Exist in Sound contract + Beatport Top 10
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Trance with nostalgic DNA: like an 80s film soundtrack but with modern production quality.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Above & Beyond - their ability to blend powerful beats with lyrical depth perfectly complements my style.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Here it would be possible to describe the technical subtleties for a long time and tediously, but I want to approach it from the other side and give this advice - develop your musical taste and listen to the pictures and sensations in your head when you listen to music or engage in other creative activities. Don’t let your imagination fade away; it is our guide and guide.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: 60% vocal trance, 40% synthwave and underground EDM. I particularly enjoy genre-blending projects
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Transforming limitations into advantages: - Home studio → intimate sound quality - Physical uniqueness → innovative workflow - Psychology background → deeper emotional resonance in music
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: 1. Distinctive vocals with Bright melancholy 2. Chart-topping experience 3. Flexibility: can deliver both classic trance vocals and experimental approaches
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 1. Discuss references and emotions 2. Draft vocals/instrumentals 3. Joint adjustments 4. Final mix. Fast turnaround - typically 3-14 days per track.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Home studio with: - HyperX SoloCast microphone - Focusrite iTrack Solo interface - FL Studio - Custom MIDI solutions adapted to my physical needs Proving that Beatport Top 100 doesn't require expensive gear.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Paul van Dyk for his melodic trance, The Mirko Hirsch for their retro-modern fusion, and my label Exist in Sound for supporting unconventional talents.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I create vocal tracks and produce music in trance, retro wave, and EDM genres. Most clients request: - Emotional vocals for their demo tracks - End-to-end production (from concept to mastering) - Arrangements with nostalgic retro flavors
