Interview with Brooks Anthony

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: My MacBook, Mic, Focusrite, headphones, and a hard drive to back everything up.

  3. Q: How would you describe your style?

  4. A: I would describe my style as soulful blues with room to create. I can lean more alternative and abstract, be soulful, or make a trap infused ballad. I remain under the R&B umbrella, but it depends on what the song needs.

  5. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  6. A: There are many people I would enjoy working with, right now I would love to work with Rodney "Darkchild" Jenkins. His production is the soundtrack to my childhood in R&B and Gospel music.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Finish the song, the instrumental, or the demo! It doesn't have to be the final version, but you will have a hard time matching the authenticity of the moment you're in.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: I usually work on rhythm and blues (R&B), but I tend to hone in more on the blues side in respect to depicting my everyday life. I see my life as too vivid to condense my personal compositions into ballads solely focused on love and relationships.

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: My collaborative selflessness and adaptability to the creative process. Often visions change, or are abandoned. I pride myself on the fact that I have always had the best interest of the song in mind, and that has never led me wrong.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: I bring intentionality, intensity, color to the songs I created and have had a hand in creating.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: My work process varies from song to song, often lyrics come to me, other times I freestyle or let the melody 'lead me' (for lack of a better term).

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: I'm a home studio guy, the minimum; Macbook, Focusrite, AT 2020, and a Mic cover.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: I am inspired by the stylings of D'Angelo, Marvin Gaye and Deitrick Haddon. From their musicianship, ear for compositions, to how their evolve their distinctive sound.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: The most common type of work I indulge in is the creation of a song; writing, vocal production, backing vocals, etc. I have also given tips and ideas that can be implemented during the mixing phase.
