Interview with Theo Känzig

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I really enjoyed collaborating and touring with the band Klischée - a memory I look back on fondly

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I’m currently recording an album with Lindsay Fergusson, working on sessions with different clients, and developing my own songs. Besides studio work, I’m also playing a lot of live shows and teaching instrumental lessons.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Not yet, I’m brand new to this platform, but I’m looking forward to connecting with great professionals and building a network to recommend in the future.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I use the best of both worlds - analog gear for warmth and character, and digital tools for precision and flexibility. Combining them allows me to get the most musical and polished results.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to my clients is to serve the song to the best of my ability, be honest throughout the process, and always deliver my highest quality work.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I like most about my job is the variety and the chance to be creative every day. I get to do what I do best - play instruments, record, and mix - and I really enjoy connecting and collaborating with people throughout the process. That exchange of ideas keeps things inspiring and fresh.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: It really depends on the project and what we’re working on. For mixing jobs, clients usually ask about timelines, revisions or specific sounds. For recording sessions, questions are more about performance or arrangement. Every project is different, so I try to adapt to what the client needs.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I ask about the artist’s vision, reference tracks, and what kind of sound or feeling they want to achieve.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Take the time to communicate your vision clearly. The more you share about what you’re aiming for - emotionally and sonically - the better the results will be. Also, don’t hesitate to ask questions or give feedback. A good collaboration is built on openness, trust, and a shared goal: serving the song.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: I’d take my guitar, my upright bass, my laptop, an audio interface, and my U87. With that setup, I could write, play, record, and stay creative - hopefully with enough power and palm trees for inspiration!

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started guitar lessons at the age of 8, studied audio engineering when I was 22, and completed my Master’s degree in music at 35. This combination of lifelong musicianship and technical training shapes how I approach every project—with both creative intuition and professional precision.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I aim for clarity, depth, and musicality - whether I’m playing, mixing, or producing. My style adapts to the project, but I’m often drawn to warm, organic sounds, subtle textures, and arrangements that serve the emotion of the song. Less is often more.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: I’m not focused on any specific artist - I’m most inspired by people who have a clear creative vision and a strong emotional connection to their music. I enjoy working with artists who are curious, open, and willing to explore ideas together to bring the best out of a song.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Mix with your ears, not with your eyes.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I usually work on singer-songwriter material, jazz, acoustic music, and electronic styles like trip-hop. I enjoy projects that are rich in atmosphere, emotion, and musicality - regardless of genre.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: I have a highly trained ear - both musically and technically. I spent years developing it through focused ear training, and it’s become one of my most reliable tools in both performance and production. I also have a strong sense for understanding an artist’s vision and helping bring it to life with clarity and intention.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I try to serve the song first. If something’s missing - like a part, a texture, or a certain energy - I use my creativity to fill the gaps in a way that supports the music. And sometimes everything is already there - then it’s about mixing with intention, to make it shine and stand out from the rest.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: There’s no single “typical” process, as I work across many areas - recording, mixing, and playing instruments. I adapt to each project’s needs, but I always start by listening carefully and understanding the artist’s vision. From there, it’s about clear communication, creative problem-solving, and delivering great-sounding results.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I work out of a small, acoustically optimized studio in the heart of Bern. It’s a hybrid setup that combines the best of both worlds - analog warmth and digital precision. The space is designed for both creative flow and critical listening, ideal for recording, mixing, and producing with focus and flexibility.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: There are too many to list them all, but I’m especially inspired by well-performed jazz artists like Brad Mehldau come to mind - as well as beautifully produced music by bands like Radiohead or Hiatus Kaiyote. I’m drawn to music that combines depth, feel, and sonic detail. I don’t believe in stylistic boundaries - good music is good music.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I mainly record guitar and bass (electric & upright) and provide mixing services. I also record singers and instrumentalists in my studio in the center of Bern.
