Interview with Khalil Ellis
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One project I’m especially proud of was working with Edward Baeza on his song “Body” from the Overdue project. I wasn’t originally part of the session—he just played the beat, and I instantly heard a hook in my head. I shared the idea, and he ended up using it on the record. Even though I didn’t sing it myself, the hook became a defining part of the track. It was one of those moments where the inspiration hit instantly, and it reminded me how valuable instinct and timing are in the creative process. I’m also currently working with Yash Musabji on his upcoming EP, writing hooks and toplines that help shape the emotional tone of the project. The collaboration has been intentional and authentic, and I’m excited to see how people connect with it when it drops.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Right now, I’m focused on expanding my catalog as a hook writer while continuing to grow my artist brand as 815. I’m working with independent artists and producers on custom R&B and TrapSoul hooks, building playlists, and running promo campaigns to push my latest releases. It’s all about momentum—creating consistently and helping other artists bring their visions to life.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Absolutely. One person I always recommend is Breana Marin. She’s a top-tier songwriter and vocalist with a track record across R&B, pop, and hip-hop. Her tone is clean, her pen is sharp, and she knows how to craft melodies that stick. If you're looking for polished toplines or female vocals to complement a project we’re working on, she’s someone I trust to elevate the sound.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital—for the speed, flexibility, and quality it gives independent artists like me. I can write, record, and deliver clean, professional hooks from anywhere without losing emotion or tone. While analog has its charm, digital lets me move fast without compromising the vibe.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to treat every song like it’s my own. You’ll get a hook that’s original, emotionally honest, and built to elevate your track. I deliver high-quality vocals, clear communication, and a vibe that fits—no shortcuts, no filler. Just real work that connects.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I love most is turning emotion into melody. There’s something powerful about taking a feeling—heartbreak, confidence, late-night thoughts—and translating it into a hook that people connect with instantly. Knowing that my words and melodies can help someone tell their story or even shift how they feel… that’s what keeps me inspired.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Most clients ask, “Can you match the vibe I’m going for?” My answer is always yes—because that’s my specialty. I study the instrumental, take in any references they provide, and write a hook that fits the mood, message, and energy. Whether it’s something vulnerable, toxic, smooth, or dark, I know how to lock into the pocket and deliver a hook that sounds like it always belonged there.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that writing a hook is quick and easy just because it's short. A great hook carries the weight of the entire song—it has to be catchy, emotional, and memorable, all in a few bars. It takes real skill to write something that sticks without sounding forced. People often underestimate how much thought, feeling, and precision go into those few lines.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually ask a few key questions to lock in the vibe: What’s the mood or emotion you’re aiming for? Do you have any reference tracks or artists in mind? What part of the beat do you want the hook placed in? Are there any themes, phrases, or lyrics you want included? What’s your deadline or release plan? These help me deliver a hook that not only sounds good—but feels right for the track
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Come with a clear vision—or at least a vibe. Whether it's a reference track, a few keywords, or just the emotion you're aiming for, the more you can share up front, the better I can lock in and deliver something that fits. Trust the process, be open to collaboration, and don’t be afraid to let the music breathe. Hooks work best when there’s room for the feeling to come through
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: If I was stuck on a desert island, I’d bring: realistically nothing cuz how am i gonna power i? My AT2038 mic – for clean, emotional vocals An Apollo Twin – reliable, compact interface My laptop with FL Studio – for producing & recording A MIDI keyboard – gotta lay down chords and melodies My AKGs – so I can still catch the vibe right That’s all I’d need to keep the music flowing, even if the only audience is the ocean.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been an artist for over 10 years and a songwriter for the last 5. I started by creating and releasing my own R&B and TrapSoul records, which helped me develop a strong sense of melody, emotion, and structure. As my catalog grew and I built a loyal listener base, I naturally shifted into writing for others. Now I focus on helping artists bring their tracks to life with hooks that hit hard and feel real.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is melodic, moody, and emotionally honest. I blend TrapSoul and Dark R&B influences to create hooks that feel late-night, introspective, and addictive. Whether it’s toxic, vulnerable, or romantic, I know how to match the vibe and turn it into something people replay. It’s polished but still raw—clean vocals with real emotion.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with PARTYNEXTDOOR, Chris Brown, and Eli Sostre. PND’s melodies and mood match the space I create in my own music. Chris brings unmatched versatility and vocal energy, and Eli Sostre’s smooth, low-key delivery over dark, vibey production fits perfectly with the kind of hooks I write. Collaborating with any of them would feel natural and elevate the sound even further.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t overcrowd the beat—especially in R&B or TrapSoul. Leave space for the vocal to breathe and carry the emotion. Sometimes the most powerful part of a track is what you don’t play. Simplicity lets the hook shine and keeps the listener locked in. Little nuance and accents go a much longer way than a super complicated over produced mess.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on R&B, TrapSoul, and Dark R&B but I've Worked In Pop, Dancehall, and Afrobeats —anything with emotion, space, and room for the vocal to lead. I’m drawn to late-night sounds with moody melodies, deep pockets, and relatable lyrics. Whether it’s something smooth, toxic, or vulnerable, I know how to bring it to life.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is writing emotionally resonant hooks that connect fast and stick with the listener. I know how to match mood, pocket, and melody to bring out the best in any beat—and I deliver it with a tone that feels real, not forced. Whether it’s moody, romantic, or toxic, I can tap into the right feeling and turn it into something unforgettable.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring the part of the song people remember. Whether it’s a hypnotic melody, a relatable lyric, or a mood that sticks, I make sure the hook feels like something. My style blends vulnerability, rhythm, and clean vocal delivery to elevate the entire track. I don’t just write melodies—I create moments.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Once I receive the beat and a reference (if provided), I start by catching the emotion and tone of the track. From there, I write and record a hook that fits the vibe—usually starting with melody, then refining lyrics. I deliver dry and wet vocal stems, and I offer up to 2 revisions to make sure it hits just right. The whole process is fast, collaborative, and focused on delivering a hook that feels authentic and replay-worthy.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup is built for vocal clarity and quick turnaround. I record in a treated space ( my room ) using a high-quality condenser mic with a clean preamp and interface chain to capture smooth, intimate vocals—perfect for R&B and TrapSoul. I track and edit everything in a streamlined FL Studio workflow, allowing me to focus on emotion and delivery without sacrificing technical quality. Everything I deliver is radio-ready and mix-friendly.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m heavily inspired by artists like Bryson Tiller, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Brent Faiyaz, and early The Weeknd—creators who know how to blend vulnerability with melody and keep the emotion raw. On the production side, I admire people who build immersive sonic worlds, like Noah “40” Shebib and Frank Dukes. Their ability to create space for the vocal to breathe while still keeping the beat moving is something I always aim for in my own work.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I specialize in writing and recording custom R&B and TrapSoul hooks—melodic, emotional, and tailored to each client’s track. Most clients come to me for that late-night, moody vibe that feels personal but still catchy. I deliver high-quality vocal stems, toplines, and lyrical hooks designed to enhance the song’s replay value and emotional depth.
