Interview with Alessio Laget

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project that stood out was working as an assistant engineer on an album by a French producer collective. Funny thing is, the vocalists ranged from 5 to 90 years old non-artists with no studio experience. Guiding them through the process and making them feel comfortable enough to perform was challenging but unforgettable.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now I’m developing two artists signed to an independent Parisian label called 36TY. One leans more Hip-Hop, the other more melancholic pop. I’m crafting their sonic identity while also mixing various EPs, including a smooth RnB project I’m really hyped about.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I’m a new-gen producer, so naturally I lean digital for speed and flexibility. But I love mixing through analog inline consoles and blending the two worlds, the texture and depth it adds is next level.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I promise to deliver a version of your song or idea that surprises you without ever losing the essence of what made it special to begin with.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love building genuine relationships with artists. It’s rewarding to propose ideas they may not have considered and see them get excited as the track evolves into something bigger than expected.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: People often ask what part of the process I enjoy most. My answer is always: that first spark when I start the beat and play the first couple melodies, and then the artist suddenly connects with what I’m hearing. That moment builds trust and sets the tone for the whole project.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That I’m only doing Hip-Hop or Trap. While I do work a lot in those genres, I actually love exploring new styles, from House and RnB to experimental and pop. It keeps things fresh.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: I usually ask: What are your goals for this track or project? How long have you been making music? And what’s your preferred way of working, do you want to be hands-on or leave more of it in my hands? It helps me understand how to bring the best out of the collaboration.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Be open. Sometimes the best version of your track isn’t exactly what you first imagined. Let the process breathe and trust that I’m here to bring your idea to life, not replace it.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Easy: my MacBook M4 Pro, ADAM Audio monitors, Apollo Twin interface, a U87 mic, and a MIDI keyboard. With those five, I could build anything from scratch.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started in 2023 after earning my bachelor's degree in sound engineering. Since then, I’ve been freelancing full-time and never looked back. This is my only job, and my full-time obsession.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I’m very adaptive, I let the song dictate the direction rather than impose a signature sound. That said, I always prioritize the vocal performance and build clean, spacious mixes around it. My beats are often leave enough space while staying impactful, with rich textures that sit just behind the main emotion.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Leon Thomas. His voice and style are just incredibly unique, soulful, and cinematic. Working with him would push and force me to dig deep to create something truly special.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: One of the most important things I’ve learned is to truly listen to the artist’s vision. Your job as a producer or engineer isn’t just technical, you’re the bridge between a creative spark and the finished product. Honoring that vision while bringing your own finesse is really really important.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I work mostly on Hip-Hop, RnB, House, and Afrobeats, but I often find myself somewhere in the space between genres. My clients tend to come with bold ideas that don’t always fit neatly into a box, and I love that.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Music production and stem mixing. I love shaping sound in a way that complements the artist’s voice and makes the track feel finished, not just polished. That final 10%, that’s where I thrive.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I bring a fresh blend of influences thanks to my international background and diverse experience across genres. I’m also highly detail-oriented, I try to make sure every element earns its place in the mix. My goal is to bring out the artist’s identity in the cleanest and most powerful way possible.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: I start by listening to the track or idea with full attention, allowing my ear to guide the initial direction. On a second listen, I usually write down instinctive ideas or technical notes. For production work, I always check client references and align on a vision, sometimes hopping on a video call during the process to make sure we’re in sync. My approach is both methodical and intuitive, making sure the song tells the story it’s supposed to.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I'm currently based at Riverside Studios in Berlin, a space that offers top-tier acoustics and a focused atmosphere. I work on Focal Twin6 monitors with a sub for full-range monitoring, record with both tube and condenser microphones depending on the tone we're after, and often bring in vintage synths like the Juno-60. A fully weighted MIDI keyboard rounds out my writing setup.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: I draw a lot of inspiration from the likes of Mike Dean for his synth work and textures, WondaGurl for her raw and detailed drums, Alex Tumay and Leslie Brathwaite for their crazy mixes.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I specialize in vocal recording, music production (especially in Hip-Hop, House, RnB, Afrobeats, and everything in between), as well as stem mixing and mastering. Whether it’s building a song from scratch or elevating an existing demo, I handle every part of the process with creative intent.
