Russ Flynn

A Generalist, In A Good Way

Russ Flynn on SoundBetter

Truth be told, I have a hard time distilling what I do into a concise statement. Depending on the crowd, I'm know as a guitar player, a bass player, an engineer, a producer, a sound designer, an arranger, a fully left-brain oriented person, a fully right-brain oriented person, a sideman, a band leader, a food & beverage geek, etc.

I'm somewhat of a chameleon and, on paper, that probably makes me a tough sell; I'm sure I seem like a 'jack of all trades, master of none'. But, I think my highly varied skill set means I bring a lot to the table with most projects. Touring with bands as multi-instrumentalist has been my primary source of income for almost 20 years now but studio work, be it working as a session musician, engineer, producer, mixer or sound designer, also takes up a fair amount of my time. I grew up on Long Island, went to undergrad in Vermont, grad school in Queens, lived in Brooklyn for 10 years and moved to Philly 5 years ago. I was a jam band kid in high school, a jazzer in college and an indie rock fanatic (Grizzly Bear, The National, Dirty Projectors, etc.) in my 20s. When I'm not making music I'm typically reading, brewing beer, hunting for interesting spirits or cooking.

I'm typically on the road a good chunk of the year but when I'm home my schedule couldn't be more flexible. Even when I'm traveling I always have a mobile setup with me. I pride myself on quick turn around times and fluid communication. I love traveling and I'm willing to hop on a plane at the drop of a hat.
