Interview with Cali H
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: How many more questions do you have?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Neumann TLM 103 – My ride-or-die mic. It captures every nuance in my voice—warm, clear, and intimate. Universal Audio Apollo Twin – Clean preamps, killer onboard effects, and the heart of my vocal chain. MacBook Pro (with Logic Pro X & plugins) – My full creative brain in a box. Writing, recording, arranging—it all happens here. Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro Headphones – Trusted for years. Accurate, comfy, and perfect for dialing in those harmonies. Solar-powered charger – Let’s be real… what good is all that gear without power? Gotta keep the island sessions flowing 🌞🎶 Even on an island, I’d find a way to make magic. Music is where the soul lives.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been singing and writing music for as long as I can remember, but I began professionally recording and working with clients over 10 years ago. My path has always blended creativity with business, and that duality has shaped me into the artist I am today. In addition to being a singer-songwriter and vocal producer, I’ve also worked behind the scenes at major labels, handling music rights, licensing, and business affairs. That experience gave me a deeper understanding of how the industry moves—not just creatively, but legally and structurally. It also taught me the importance of protecting your work and building meaningful, transparent collaborations. Now, I combine that industry knowledge with my artistry—offering clients not just a unique vocal sound, but also a professional, organized, and trustworthy creative process.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is a soulful fusion—a blend of rich, textured vocals, emotional depth, and genre-bending versatility. I move fluidly between Soul, R&B, Jazz, EDM, Pop, and even Classical, always bringing a unique perspective shaped by my Dutch-Ethiopian roots and a deep love for timeless music. Think: the warmth of Anita Baker, the edge of Pharcyde, the spiritual vibe of Erykah Badu, and the precision of Cecilia Bartoli—with my own twist. Whether it's a smoky verse, ethereal harmonies, or a hypnotic hook, I aim to deliver vocals that feel alive, honest, and unforgettable.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Anderson .Paak—his fusion of soul, funk, hip-hop, and raw storytelling feels deeply aligned with my own musical spirit. He’s playful but intentional, and his production choices always leave room for feel, not just perfection. I think our vocal textures and energy would complement each other beautifully. I’d also love to collaborate with Snoh Aalegra, Robert Glasper, or Little Simz—artists who make emotionally rich, genre-defying music that sits between the classic and the future. Working with any of them would feel like creating something real—something that moves people.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Leave space for the vocal to breathe. When producing, it’s tempting to fill every pocket of the track—but sometimes, the magic lives in the space between the sounds. Give your vocal moments to shine by pulling back instrumentation during key phrases or using subtle automation to create emotional dynamics. A well-placed pause or drop can make a lyric hit way harder.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on a blend of Soul, R&B, Jazz, EDM, Pop, and sometimes Classical fusion. I love genre-crossing projects that let me experiment vocally and emotionally—whether it’s a moody downtempo track, a lush ballad, a funky groove, or an ethereal dance cut. My voice and writing style fit especially well with tracks that need warmth, depth, vibe, and feeling—but I’m also down to flip the script and try something unexpected. From underground producers to major-label sounds, I bring a versatile energy to every session.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Whether it’s delivering a silky smooth hook, layering haunting background harmonies, or writing a topline that sticks with you—I know how to bring out the soul in a song. My voice adapts across genres without losing its identity, and I have a natural feel for phrasing, dynamics, and tone that makes each take feel intentional and alive. I also have a strong sense of melody and storytelling, which helps me write lyrics and vocal parts that are memorable, honest, and musically compelling.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring emotion, originality, and soul. My voice carries a mix of warmth, texture, and versatility—able to float effortlessly between genres like Soul, R&B, Jazz, EDM, Pop, and even Classical. Whether it’s a hypnotic hook, rich harmonies, or a verse with lyrical depth, I tap into the feeling behind the music to make sure every take tells a story.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 🔄 My Typical Work Process: We start with your vision — you send me the instrumental, BPM, key, any lyrics or topic ideas, and references if you have them. I’ll lay down a rough MP3 demo of the vocals (lead, harmonies, adlibs—whatever you need) so you can feel the direction and vibe. Once you approve the demo and the full payment is released, I’ll deliver the final, professionally tuned and edited vocal stems (wet & dry, 24-bit/48kHz WAV files), ready to drop into your session. You get 2 rounds of minor revisions included to make sure everything hits just right. ⏱ Standard turnaround is 3–7 days depending on schedule, and rush delivery (48 hrs) is available if needed. I aim to make the process super smooth and collaborative while delivering vocals that feel real, inspired, and fully aligned with your track.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record from my home studio in Los Angeles, which is fully equipped for high-quality vocal production. I use a Neumann TLM 103 paired with a Universal Audio Apollo Twin interface, running through Logic Pro X. My vocal chain is clean, warm, and industry standard—perfect for delivering polished lead vocals, rich harmonies, and detailed background layers. My recording space is acoustically treated to ensure a clean, balanced sound with minimal room noise, so your stems are mix-ready. I also offer pre-mixed demo vocals and can provide fully comped, tuned, and edited stems in 24-bit/48kHz WAV format. Whether you're after a raw, intimate take or something lush and layered, my setup ensures your vision comes through crystal clear.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m deeply inspired by artists and producers who blend soul, storytelling, and sonic innovation. Anita Baker, Erykah Badu, and Sade taught me the power of subtlety and emotional nuance. A Tribe Called Quest, Pharcyde, and J Dilla influence how I approach rhythm, groove, and lyrical flow. Bilal, Stevie Wonder, and Alicia Keys remind me to always bring soul and honesty to every note. And on the classical side, Cecilia Bartoli has been a major influence in how I understand breath, phrasing, and vocal precision.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Whether it’s a powerful hook, layered harmonies, or a full song from scratch, I help bring each track to life with a unique vocal texture and creative input. My clients often come to me for a distinct, genre-bending sound that blends emotional depth with musical versatility.
