SCHAUMHAUM on SoundBetter

soulful music production, vibrant live sessions & juicy mixing in genres like indie fusion, alt-pop, folk, soul & lo-fi by michl dorn.

for over 10 years i've been filming and recording one-take live performances — blending cinematic visuals with clean, emotional audio post. capturing artists in their most honest form is where it all began.

in the studio, i dive deep into arrangement & production — shaping songs from the inside out. my focus is always on the feeling behind the music, translating emotion into sound design, structure and space.

mixing is my loop zone. whether from stems, memos or field recordings, i aim for clarity, warmth and a vibe that sticks.

based in regensburg, working interplanetary.
let’s create something that feels like you.

Interview with SCHAUMHAUM

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: filmed and mixed a live session with sons of the east. i'd always loved their music.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: a summer ep for my own band — lots of warmth, noise and long echoes.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: sam irl — mastering engineer and groove magician based in vienna.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: both. analog for flavor, digital for freedom. best when they meet in the middle.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: to treat your song with care, curiosity and soul — and to make sure it still feels like you when it’s done.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: catching the moment (young lights) when a song suddenly feels like itself.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: “can you make it sound fuller without losing the vibe?” — yes, by respecting the silence between the sounds.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: that it's just technical. in truth, it's emotional architecture.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: how do you want it to feel? what’s the story behind this song? any reference tracks you loop endlessly?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: look for someone who listens deeply — not just to the track, but to you. vibe matters.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: zoom f8n field recorder, sennheiser mkh 416, red epic dragon, solar panel, toothpick — for survival and stereo imaging.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: started with live sessions over 10 years ago — one-takes, field recordings, music videos. evolved into full-on production and mixing. still feels like day one.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: warm, cinematic, and a bit offbeat. always in service of the song.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: yussef dayes — for his raw rhythm, open energy and the way he makes time feel alive.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: mute more. the groove often lives in the space you didn’t fill.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: indie fusion, alt-pop, folk, soul, lo-fi — often rooted in acoustic textures or voice memo magic. anything with heart and honesty.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: translating a mood into sound. also: knowing when less is more.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: emotion-focused decisions, warm textures, and an outside ear that listens like a fan, not just a technician.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: i listen. a lot. then i dive into structure, tone and texture. whether it’s production, mixing or film, it all starts with feeling.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: a cozy hybrid studio in regensburg — analog warmth meets digital precision. neve, api, moog, prophet, uad. plus: a mobile field recording setup with zoom & mkh for capturing sound and spirit anywhere.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: bon iver, m83 and jacob collier — artists who turn feeling into architecture and chaos into beauty.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: producing, mixing and filming live sessions with soul. shaping songs and visuals around emotion and atmosphere.
