Interview with Sven Exner

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of was producing a song for an emerging artist that went on to gain significant attention on streaming platforms. My role involved songwriting, full production, and vocal coaching throughout the recording process. What made this project special was how we took a simple idea and crafted it into a polished track that truly connected with listeners emotionally. Seeing the artist grow and the song resonate with people reinforced why I love what I do.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now, I’m working on several exciting projects, including producing emotional pop songs for upcoming artists, co-writing tracks with singers looking to refine their sound, and creating custom music for media placements. I’m also developing new ideas that blend electronic textures with heartfelt songwriting, always aiming to push creative boundaries and deliver fresh, impactful music.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: While I focus on my own work, I respect and admire many talented professionals on SoundBetter. If a project requires expertise beyond my scope, I’m happy to recommend trusted collaborators in areas like mixing, mastering, or specialized session musicians. Building a strong network of reliable creatives is important, and I’m always open to connecting clients with the right people to bring their vision to life.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I use a hybrid approach, combining the warmth and character of analog gear with the precision and flexibility of digital tools. Analog equipment brings a unique depth and organic feel to sounds that’s hard to replicate, especially for vocals and synths. Meanwhile, digital tools offer incredible versatility, speed, and access to a vast range of effects and instruments. By blending both worlds, I get the best of each: emotional, rich tones from analog, paired with modern, efficient production workflows in the digital realm.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to clients is to bring dedication, creativity, and professionalism to every project. I commit to truly understanding your vision and working closely with you to create music that not only sounds great but resonates emotionally. I value open communication, timely delivery, and a collaborative spirit to ensure you’re proud of the final result. Together, we’ll make music that stands out and connects with your audience.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I love most about my job is helping artists bring their emotions and stories to life through music. There’s something truly rewarding about taking a raw idea or feeling and shaping it into a song that connects with listeners on a deep level. I also enjoy the creative collaboration process — working together to explore new sounds, moods, and ideas. Every project is unique, and that keeps the work exciting and inspiring.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Common questions I get from clients include: Can you help me develop my song idea from scratch? Absolutely! I specialize in taking raw ideas and turning them into polished, fully produced tracks. Do you offer vocal production and coaching? Yes, I guide artists through vocal recording and performance to get the best possible take. Can you work within my genre/style? I work across a range of styles including emotional pop, R&B, electronic, and cinematic music, and I’m always open to new genres and challenges. What’s the typical turnaround time? It depends on the project scope, but I always communicate timelines clearly and strive to deliver high-quality work promptly. How involved will I be in the process? I encourage open communication and collaboration at every stage to ensure the final result matches your vision. If you have any specific questions or needs, feel free to reach out—I’m happy to discuss how we can work together.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: One of the biggest misconceptions is that songwriting and production are just about technical skills or making something sound “perfect.” In reality, it’s much more about capturing emotion and telling a story through music. The technical side is important, but the true challenge and magic lie in connecting with listeners on a deeper level and bringing out the artist’s authentic voice.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: When working with new clients, I like to ask questions that help me fully understand their vision and needs. Some of the key questions include: What is the overall mood or message you want the song to convey? Do you have any reference tracks or artists that inspire the sound you’re aiming for? What is the target audience or platform for this music (radio, streaming, sync, live performance)? Are there specific elements or instruments you want featured or avoided? What stage is your song currently at — just an idea, a demo, or near completion? How involved do you want to be in the production and writing process? What’s your timeline and budget for the project?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Take the time to find someone who truly understands your vision and style. Communication is key — make sure you can openly share your ideas and feedback throughout the process. Look for a provider who is flexible, collaborative, and passionate about bringing out the best in your music. Also, listen carefully to their previous work to see if their sound resonates with what you want to achieve. A strong working relationship will make all the difference in creating music that you’re proud of.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I were stranded on a desert island and could only take five pieces of gear, I’d choose: A versatile MIDI controller – for composing and controlling virtual instruments A laptop with my DAW and plugins – to produce and record anywhere Quality headphones – for accurate monitoring without needing a full studio setup A good condenser microphone – to capture vocals and acoustic instruments An audio interface – to connect my gear and ensure high-quality recordings With these essentials, I could keep creating music no matter where I am.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I’ve been working in music production and songwriting for [X] years, starting out by honing my skills in home studios and small projects. Over time, I expanded my experience by collaborating with various artists across genres, learning the ins and outs of modern production, arrangement, and songwriting. This journey has allowed me to develop a strong ear for emotion, structure, and sound aesthetics, helping me bring songs from raw ideas to polished, release-ready tracks. Today, I’m passionate about partnering with artists to create music that truly connects with listeners.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style blends emotional storytelling with modern production techniques. I focus on creating songs that are both heartfelt and polished, combining rich melodies, dynamic arrangements, and thoughtful sound design. Whether it’s pop, R&B, or electronic-infused music, I aim to craft tracks that connect deeply with listeners and stand out with their unique vibe and atmosphere.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with an artist like Billie Eilish because of her unique ability to blend intimacy with innovation. Her music pushes boundaries while staying deeply emotional and personal — qualities I strive for in my own productions. Collaborating with someone who’s unafraid to explore new sounds and emotions would be incredibly inspiring and rewarding.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Focus on emotion before perfection. A technically perfect mix won’t move anyone if the performance doesn’t feel real. Whether you're working on vocals, chords, or arrangement — always ask: Does it make me feel something? Capture that first, then fine-tune the details.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on emotional and modern pop music, blending elements of electronic, R&B, and cinematic sounds. My productions often focus on strong melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and atmospheric sound design. I also create custom tracks for special moments — whether it’s for artists, events, or media projects — and enjoy working across genres to bring each song’s unique story to life.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: I usually work on emotional pop, modern R&B, and electronic-influenced productions — often blending genres to create a fresh and personal sound. Whether it’s a stripped-down ballad, a moody alt-pop track, or a beat-driven, radio-ready song, I focus on emotion, melody, and atmosphere. I also enjoy working on cinematic pop and custom music for media, where storytelling through sound plays a big role.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring emotion, clarity, and a deep understanding of what makes a song connect with listeners. Whether I’m producing, writing, or co-creating, I focus on highlighting the artist’s unique voice and making sure every element—melody, lyrics, and sound design—serves the emotion of the track. With a trained ear for structure and modern aesthetics, I help turn raw ideas into polished, compelling songs that feel both authentic and professional. My goal is always to create music that resonates — not just sounds good, but feels right.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Every project starts with understanding your vision. I usually begin by discussing the mood, message, and style you're aiming for. From there, I either build a custom instrumental, develop your existing idea, or refine a demo you already have. If I’m writing or co-writing, I focus on lyrics, melody, and song structure to make sure the emotional core of the track is strong. Once the production is in place, I move on to vocal production, mixing, and polishing the track until it sounds release-ready. Communication is key throughout the process — I always make sure you're involved and happy at every step.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is a hybrid setup combining analog warmth with digital flexibility. I work with a selection of analog and digital synthesizers, high-quality audio interfaces, and industry-standard DAWs like Logic Pro X and Ableton Live. I use professional monitoring (Yamaha HS8s) and headphones to ensure mixes translate well across systems. For sound design and mixing, I rely on top-tier plugins from UAD, FabFilter, Soundtoys, and more. This setup allows me to move quickly, stay creative, and deliver radio-ready results.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by artists and producers who blend emotion with innovation. People like FINNEAS, for his minimal yet powerful production style, Max Martin for his incredible sense of structure and melody, and Fred again.. for capturing raw, human moments in modern electronic music. I also admire producers like Jon Bellion and Ludwig Göransson, who aren’t afraid to break genre boundaries and bring cinematic depth into pop music.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I specialize in writing and producing emotional, modern songs with a strong sense for melody, structure, and sound aesthetics. Most often, I help artists bring their raw ideas to life – whether by developing full productions, co-writing lyrics and toplines, or creating tailor-made instrumentals. I also work as a ghostwriter and co-producer, helping clients shape a radio-ready sound that connects deeply with their audience.
