Kyle Larimore on SoundBetter

Hi, I’m Kyle Larimore! Here on SoundBetter, my goal is simple: not only to make your project sound better, louder, or bigger, but clearer, more emotional, and more intentional.

I help independent content creators in finding premium custom cinematic background music for their projects, without the hassle of legal limitations, relying on generic stock music, monotonous AI-generated music, or enduring endless revisions.

My workflow is designed for creators who are juggling real-life challenges, such as tight timelines, limited bandwidth, and high standards. I keep the process simple, collaborative, and focused on results: clear direction, fast iteration, and music that actually moves the needle emotionally.

I’ve composed original music for various projects, including short films, trailers, theater productions, ads, and independent artists. My objective is to create music that has a profound impact on visual media, with narratives that demand more than just background noise.

Interview with Kyle Larimore

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I recently completed a long-form narrative project where the music had to maintain emotional continuity across multiple scenes and character arcs. My role was to establish thematic cohesion, such as motifs that evolve with the story without becoming repetitive. The success wasn’t achieved through a single cue; it was the subtle consistency that permeated the entire story arc. This kind of work has a profound emotional impact that builds over time and remains timeless.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Digital tools and an analog mindset. I appreciate the speed and flexibility of modern workflows, but I believe in terms of performance, dynamics, and musical intention. The technology serves as the delivery system; the emotion is the product.

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: Clear communication, thoughtful music, and a lack of ego in the room are essential. I’ll treat your project with utmost importance, as it truly matters. You’ll always be informed about the current status, upcoming tasks, and the rationale behind creative decisions. There will be no ghosting or guesswork; instead, progress will be transparent and consistent.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: What I like most about my job is experiencing the moment when a client hears the cue and goes quiet, signaling that the music has truly resonated with them. It’s incredibly rewarding to create an invisible architecture for emotion and to be a part of building that bridge for someone else’s story.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: That composing is simply about making something "sound cool." Real scoring, however, involves problem-solving under the influence of emotions and tight deadlines. The primary objective is not to impress but to serve the story, pacing, audience, and edit. When the music seamlessly integrates into the experience and intensifies the impact of a scene, that’s true success.

  11. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  12. A: Hire a composer who aligns with your vision, not just for their technical skills. Seek someone who asks thoughtful questions about your story, your target audience, and your emotional objectives. The ideal composer doesn’t just deliver files; they collaborate with you to make informed decisions. If someone views your project as a mere transaction, you’ll likely receive transactional results.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: My music is a cinematic journey, weaving together melodic beauty and raw emotion. It fuses classical roots with contemporary sounds, crafting themes that are pure, harmonies that are lush, and intensities that are masterfully restrained. This approach creates music that speaks with clarity, evoking moods with depth and intention.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Commit early to the emotional direction of your music, even before you start polishing the sound design. If the core idea doesn’t resonate with you on piano or strings alone, adding more layers won’t save it. Prioritize emotion, and texture can follow.

  17. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  18. A: Translating abstract emotions into concrete music can be challenging for clients. They often struggle to articulate their preferences beyond vague terms like “bigger,” “darker,” or “more emotional.” I excel at decoding these descriptions and crafting music that resonates with the scene and the underlying story. This translation layer is where most projects either thrive or face difficulties.

  19. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  20. A: Taste, restraint, and emotional architecture. These are the elements I focus on in my music design. While anyone can stack sounds, I’m passionate about creating emotional flow that evokes tension, release, breath, and weight. I’m particularly interested in how a piece feels physically, not just how it sounds. The result is music that resonates with intention and harmonizes with the narrative you’re conveying.

  21. Q: What's your typical work process?

  22. A: I begin by listening attentively, not to references, but to your intent. Once I grasp the emotional target, I quickly sketch out themes, establish the emotional core, and then construct the arrangement around the narrative arc of the scene. You’ll receive early drafts to review, and I iterate meticulously. I ensure seamless transitions, clear communication, and eliminate any ambiguity. The workflow is designed to maintain momentum, not chaos.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I compose emotionally charged piano and string music, as well as cinematic music for films, theater, trailers, and narrative projects. My clients typically seek music that conveys a message rather than merely serving as background sound; they want a story engine that drives the narrative. Whether it’s a single cue or a full score, my goal remains consistent: to achieve clarity of emotion, momentum in the scene, and music that carries the weight of the moment without overshadowing the main focus.
