Interview with GENIUS KD
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’m proud of the MK (Mankranso) Story project. It was more than a song—it became a community anthem. I wrote, performed, and co-produced it to inspire youth in my hometown. It showed how music can spark change.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm finalizing my Chill Up project and collaborating with Woodies Small on an Afrobeat song. I’m also curating sounds with KHENDIBEATZ and planning my next EP release.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I’m always open to discovering other amazing talents here and building collaborations that benefit the client’s vision.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital—for its flexibility and speed. But I still love analog warmth and sometimes blend both for textur
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Authenticity, commitment, and a vibe that feels like home. I’m here to elevate your sound, not just finish a project.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The freedom to create and connect. Nothing beats seeing an idea transform into a record that resonates with people.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They often ask, “Can you make my song stand out?” My answer: Absolutely—when your story is authentic, and we match it with a unique sonic identity, the song becomes unforgettable.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That being a musician or producer is just about hitting “record” or dropping beats. It’s way deeper—we’re building emotional and cultural bridges through sound.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What feeling or message are you trying to convey? What references or inspirations do you have? What’s your deadline and intended audience?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Look for someone who listens first. A good collaborator should understand your vision before bringing in their skill set.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: MacBook Pro Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Rode NT1-A Akai MPK Mini Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro headphones
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started writing songs in 2012 during high school and began recording in 2013. Since then, I’ve collaborated with numerous artists and producers across Ghana and beyond. It's been over a decade of creative evolution.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Versatile, conscious, and rhythmically bold. I call it Afro-fusion because it weaves Afrobeat, hip-hop, soul, and traditional Ghanaian influences.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Jon Bellion and Worlasi. Jon because of his deep production mind and story-driven approach. Worlasi because he’s a sonic rebel from my region who reflects the African spirit authentically.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Never underestimate the power of silence and space in a mix. Sometimes less is more—leave room for vocals or instruments to breathe
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Afro-fusion, Afrobeat, soul, and alternative hip-hop. I enjoy blending genres, which gives my sound a fresh, cross-cultural appeal.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Songwriting and vocal arrangement. I have a strong sense for melodies and can create catchy yet meaningful lines that stick with listeners.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Emotion, honesty, and creative fusion. I bring raw ideas to life with rhythm, hooks, and unique vocal textures that make the track feel alive and distinct.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I usually start with a melody or concept. Once the mood is set, I build around it with beats or chord progressions. I then write or co-write lyrics, record guide vocals, and shape the vibe collaboratively if another artist is involved.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My setup is a compact but powerful home studio. I use a Focusrite Scarlett interface, a Rode NT1-A mic, Yamaha HS5 monitors, FL Studio and Logic Pro, plus a MIDI keyboard. It’s optimized for vocals, beat production, and mixing.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Jon Bellion, Worlasi, Kojo Antwi, and Arathejay are major influences. They’ve mastered the blend of storytelling, sonic experimentation, and emotional depth—something I constantly strive for in my music.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually work as a songwriter, vocalist, and co-producer, helping artists shape their sound and message. I also offer vocal arrangement and melody crafting services, especially within Afro-fusion, Afrobeat, and alternative genres.
