Laura Oakes on SoundBetter

Specialising in Pop, Country & Power Ballads. With over 12 million global streams on vocal and top line projects for clients including Universal, BMG and BBC, nothing gives me greater joy than bringing a musical project to life whether that be arranging and stacking up rich background vocals, singing lead or writing lyrics and top lines.

Hi, I'm Laura! I have over 15 years of professional experience delivering lead vocals as well as arranging and stacking backing vocals on a huge range of projects. I have worked as a background vocalist with artists on Universal, Sony, Warner and BMG as well as lending my voice to major national TV campaigns and film projects for clients such as BBC, ITV, Channel 5 and Sky.

As a songwriter, I have had so much fun top lining songs for artists on Sony and BMG as well as many independent labels and have amassed millions of global streams across the Pop, Dance and Country genres. whether it be an emotive ballad, a high energy dance tune or a singer-songwriter style track, I love getting to the heart of the project and investing my time and skills in to everything I work on. I would like to think the joy I feel when working on a project comes through in every completed project.

Interview with Laura Oakes

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: That I will always treat your track with care no matter what. As a creator, I know how much it means when somebody else really cares about your project and so that's what I always want to pass on to clients.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I have been working professionally as a vocalist for 15 years now. I graduated from Leeds Conservatoire in 2012 with a BA Hons in Popular Music and then again in 2021 with a Masters Degree in Composition. My career path has been rich a varied which I feel very fortunate that I get to say. I really think that is down to the fact I was so keen to collaborate when I was at University. Any vocals someone would need for any of their projects I would say yes to because I just loved collaborating and that still holds true today.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: It can be anything! I sing across a wide range of genres but I find the music I've done the most work on to be pop, dance and country music

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: I would say strongest still is pitching and harmony building.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: I would hope that one of the main things I bring to a song I'm recording vocals on, whether that be lead or background is a warm tone. I also really try and sit with the song before I put anything down to work out what it needs from me. The number one rule is to always serve the song and not my own preferences so even if that means I don't put absolutely every idea I come up with down, or use every vocal choice I could make because, actually it's not what's best for the song, then I think that's really important to work out what the song actually needs from me.

  11. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  12. A: I record everything through my trusty UAD Apollo Twin and SM7 microphone. They are both such simple yet first class pieces of equipment and I love creating new projects on them in my little vocal studio.

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: There is so much good pop music at the moment. I love the vocal production on Billie Ellish and Sabrina Carpenter's albums. I also am still completely obsessed with the overall production of Kacey Musgraves' Deeper Well album too.

  15. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  16. A: Mostly, I'll be layering up harmony parts for background vocals for clients which is my absolute favourite thing to do. But I also love getting to record the lead vocals for clients too.
