Interview with Chris Longo

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: In 2019, I served as Producer, Mixing and Mastering Engineer, and Performer on a KISS tribute album called KISS Klassics 1. As of right now, I am involved in a lot of collaboration with friends, current and former bandmates, and mentors honing our songwriting and production skills for the betterment of each other and our clients.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently working on 24 of my own tracks, preparing them for sync placements.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I'm new to the platform so no one to recommend at this time.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Honestly, whichever one best suits the client's vision for their project.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My goal is to bring out the best in your music and help it shine above the noise—authentic, impactful, and uniquely yours.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I enjoy working at my own pace in a space that inspires me—and there’s real satisfaction in helping others make their music sound amazing.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: “How did you do that?!” Practice, practice, practice! I’m always pushing myself to improve and grow, staying curious and learning new techniques to bring the best to every project.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: People often think anyone can handle mixing or mastering, but without a trained ear, it’s easy to overlook the tiny details that really bring a track to life.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: What’s your overall vision for this project? (What mood, style, or vibe are you aiming for?) Do you have reference tracks you’d like me to listen to? (Helps me understand your sound and expectations.) What’s your timeline and deadline for this project? (So I can plan and deliver on time.) Have you worked with a mixing/mastering engineer or producer before? (Helps me understand your experience and preferences.) Are there any specific elements or parts you want to highlight or fix? (Vocals, drums, guitars, etc.) How involved do you want to be in the process? (Do you want to provide feedback frequently or prefer me to handle most decisions?) What formats and stems do you need delivered? (WAV, MP3, stems, instrumental, etc.) Are there any technical details I should know about your files? (Sample rate, bit depth, session format, etc.) What’s your budget range? (Helps tailor the services to your needs.)

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Have real conversations with a few options, and go with the one that feels right for you—even if that’s not me.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My laptop, drum kit, a Shure SM57, audio interface, and mic cable.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been playing music for over 40 years, and for most of that time I've dabbled in music production. As technology improved, I was able to office my services remotely.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I’d describe my style as detail-driven and artist-focused, blending technical precision with creative intuition. I strive to enhance the emotional core of each track while maintaining clarity, balance, and impact. Whether it’s a raw rock anthem, a polished pop song, or an atmospheric indie track, I tailor my approach to fit the artist’s vision—combining clean mixes, dynamic energy, and subtle sonic textures that bring the music to life without overshadowing it.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: If I could work with any artist or producer, it would be Mutt Lange. His ability to craft massive, polished rock records while preserving the power and emotional weight of the performances is unmatched. Albums like Back in Black, Hysteria, and Highway to Hell set a gold standard for sonic precision and layered production without losing the grit. I’d love to be in the room with someone who pushes every detail—vocals, drums, harmonies, dynamics—to the edge of perfection. Collaborating with Mutt would be a masterclass in taking rock music to its most epic, yet focused, form.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Get it right at the source. Take the time to ensure proper mic placement and gain staging.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Rock, Classic Rock, Singer-Songwriter but I'm eager to branch out and work on other genres.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: A sharp eye (and ear) for detail is essential in this work, and it's something I consistently bring to every project.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I listen closely—not just to your music, but to your references and your vision—so the final product sounds exactly how you imagined.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I start by carefully listening to the client’s reference tracks and having a conversation about their vision—where they want to take the project, what inspires them, and what emotions they want the final product to convey. My goal is to truly understand their perspective so we're creatively aligned from the beginning. Once that foundation is set, I can confidently dive into the technical aspects like editing drum tracks, mixing, or whatever the project requires.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: Small but functional home project studio nestled in my sleepy hometown where nothing exciting ever happens.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Mutt Lange, Chris Lord Alge, Bob Rock, Kenny Aronoff, Brian Tichy

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Mixing, Mastering, and Session Drums (acoustic and programmed).
