Interview with Andrés Sánchez Ascencio

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Always listen first, make sure you feel it.

  3. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  4. A: Hip hop, urban music like reggaeton or trap, electronic music for the club, pop records and more.

  5. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  6. A: Communication with the artist. Together, we figure out what they're looking for—often, they know how it should sound but don’t have the technical tools to get there.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: Loudness, space, vibe.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: I listen carefully and write down the feeling. Working with music quickly helps keep the emotion alive—especially during mastering. Mixing is more sculptural; it takes time to understand the arrangement and the overall needs of the production. Depending on the artist, I suggest different effects and spatial treatments to make the song feel more alive and three-dimensional. I always have a conversation with the artist about what they’re looking for, ask for musical inspirations and references, and then start working—usually taking breaks between sessions.

  11. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  12. A: I'm always looking up to the greats, recent and people that have been in the game for ages, producers like Metro Boomin, Rick Rubin, Sega Bodega, Arca, JDilla and many more. Also I believe in the academix phase of everything and keep myself busy reading and taking courses with professionals from the industry like Francisco Sánchez, Aubrey Whithfiel, and many more.

  13. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  14. A: I usually work with independent productions and I have been able to adapt to all kinds of sounds and feeling. I'm sure we can find the sound you want for you project, from Hip Hop, to bass music, Pop music or even simple guitar and voice songs.

  15. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  16. A: I have to Genelec 8020 D + JBL subwoofer in a fully treated room.
