Interview with Serban Sirbu
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I recently worked with 2 large sports brands and I was proud that someone trusted my ability to score frame by frame. I supervised the audio and implementation into the visuals they had.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Major releases in mixing and production.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I like both
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is that I will treat your work as if it is my own.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I really like the fulfillment I feel when something is finally dialed in and the client has a great reaction when everything is finalized.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: Can you make me sound like I'm talking through a telepohne? A: Absolutely.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That we all use Izotope assistant
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure people are interested in hearing your vision because otherwise they will never be able to get the results you hear in your head.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Ridiculous - an SSL mixer, LA2A, EQP1A, Lexicon, and U47.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Who do you listen to? Are there any sonic inspirations for this project (both creative and technical)? Where do you see your music being performed and played? What do you not like when you listen to your favourite artists and other music? What kind of visual would match this project?
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I attended an audio engineering school in 2015 and started mixing alone in 2013.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Organic and Live, OR a Swiss Army Knife
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Pharell, super interested to see how he combines production and artistry at the same time.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Close your eyes.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on hip-hop, rock, ambient, and classical music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Listening (no-pun intended).
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: It starts with the client, I first figure out the scope and learn what they want as the outcome, and my main goal is not always to perform surgery on the song. It is very genre dependent and my studies in music contribute to the knowledge I have which hits the target everytime. People recognize me for my organic, natural mixing style, as well as maximalist style when it comes to genres such as EDM.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I tend to organize everything first and reference the client notes. My priority is vocals, and for non-vocal songs I like to find a focus point.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I am using Adam Speakers and Subs for my large system, and Yamaha NS10 for near-field. I use the full UAD suite, along with a small vocal chain I have (LA2A, Purple Audio MC77, etc) if it needs. For mastering I use a separate room and reference with a combination of Chandler, BAX, and Izotope Hardware/Software.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am heavily inspired by guitarists who spend so much time and money on equipment to find their signature sound, much like a mix engineer would.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily mix and do sound design across all genres.
