Interview with Summer Bowden
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I’ve helped people write songs or raps, but the ones I’m always most proud of are the ones that I do for myself - it brings a different level or reward and joy when it’s yours and yours to keep
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Personal music, I’m also helping a couple of small bands integrate some different styles into their song for better reach for their target audience
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Unfortunately mot
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Either or not fussy
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise to you is that you will be fully satisfied with my services and we will not complete them until all parties are happy
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The fact it doesn’t feel like a job or a chore - this is my PASSION through and through in every lifetime
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They commonly ask about previous work, to which I show them personal songs I’ve made in certain timeframes - they always leave impressed
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it’s a waste of my talent - I like to see it as me sharing my talent with those who need it
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is the main thing you look for in a song? What does this mean to you? Is it personal or are we planning to scale?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice would be to understand that whilst I’m starting out - I’ve also been doing this for years - I have the experience that most don’t have until they decide to do music full time - and I have the resilliancw ti keep going - the ability to tweak if needed - we don’t leave until YOU are happy
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Notepad, pen, guitar, food, water -
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been writing music since I can remember - I still remember songs I wrote when I was 7 in my massive pink notebook, and I still think it could be a hit, in terms of monetising my skill this is the first time as until now I liked to keep my music personal - as it is my therapy- it feels weird to share my therapy sessions with the world - but what’s more stupid is hiding the talent behind it - enough is enough - I start today!
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style varies depending on what I’m going through - for me music is my therapy - so when I write - the product is largely based on where my head is mentally - but I have the skill to put myself into certain mindsets to achieve the style I want for that particular song
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Honestly alive or dead it would be amy winehouse, we’d get along I know it, her personality shines through her songs and I know mine does as well. But to be more realistic I would really love to work with Emma Nissan, or skye Newman, both new artists but the vibe is similar- we could make good music
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Never leave it if your not 100% happy. It’s YOUR work YOUR noise, YOU decide when it’s done and your happy.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: All types I don’t like to be tied down to a certain genre
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Songwriting, singing and rapping
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Life, meaning, emotion, value, perspective, clarity, ability to relate, but it’s more about what the song bings me - fulfilment in ways you could never imagine
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I put on a beat and start recording. I sing what comes to mind I then listen back to the recording and write a song from what I just said - essentially all my work is free form/freestyle. I can write a hit in 10 mins and record in in under an hour - a skill that has given me albums worth of songs over the years - a skill that most spend years trying to master
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I actually just write on my phone and I use BandLab with my headphones
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Amy winehouse, Ella Fitzgerald, lauryn hill, Jill Scott, Tupac, biggie smalls, uk rappers
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: R&B, soul/neo soul, jazz, singer songwriter vibe, I also rap hip hop, uk grime, uk rap, conscious.
