Interview with Christian Pereira

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: The 3 projects I'm working on now I'm definitely the most proud of, because each is a different genre, one is trap, one is Indie Pop/Rock, and the other is Afrobeats/ R&b. They showcase the talent of the artists and my versatility as an engineer. I was the main recording engineer on all three projects, and the sole mixer on all three.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now I'm working on a 3 local artists' debut albums.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Definitely.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Depends on the situation and type of music. I like to use a hybrid system for most cases, mostly for fun and I feel hardware gets tracks closer to where I want them faster. But, if I was forced to choose I'd say digital for ease of use, and ability to work anywhere and anytime.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: To make sure we're satisfied with the end product before release.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The moment everything starts to come together how I intended. Also the flexibility and different state of the art rooms I get to work in.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How much I charge. My price.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That specific gear or software/templates, is what makes records or engineers great.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Which records inspire you? What type of audience do you want this record to reach specifically? What's the deadline?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Send your favorite music that inspires you for references, communicate the meaning behind the song and process of making it. Share your goals and what type of audience you want the music to reach.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My laptop, my interface, a bluetooth speaker, apple airpods, and a power generator.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started trying to remake instrumentals on an ipod app when I was in middle school, around 2012, and through high school I was making beats for local artists in my area. Through lack of money, or knowing of any studios, I decided to learn how to record the local artists myself and ended up prioritizing recording, learning how to work in professional studios, and learning everything I possibly could about music and mixing which continues today.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Versatile & creative

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: No specific artist, but I like working with up and coming artists because they're the most hungry and creative.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Source material is the most important, don't be scared to break rules.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Probably an even split between Trap & Alternative Indie Rock/Pop, with Afrobeats being a close second.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Adaptation to the environment, musically or physically. I've always been able to work with whatever I have available on-hand, equipment or material wise.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: My attention to detail and level of understanding of intent. I have a very wide range in taste of music and like to push boundaries on the creative side when possible.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: The typical day consists of listening to the music and references, diving into the session whether I was the recording engineer or not, and listening for any improvements that can be made. Then I start the mix prep which usually consists of organizing, naming and color coding, gain-staging and cleanup or tuning if needed. From there I get to mixing.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work out of the various industry leading studios in Miami and the surrounding area, which are all equipped with top of the line hardware, software and acoustics.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Leslie Brathwaite, Jaycen Joshua, Dave Pensado, Derek Ali, Jimmy Douglass, Young Guru, Bainz, Teezio, Tchad Blake

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Creative mixing, production and arrangement, tuning and alignment.
