Interview with Faccu Correa
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment I work in consulting, teaching Ableton Live classes and mastering tracks for my regular clients.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No, I don't know anyone. This is my first time on this platform.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I usually work digitally, as it's what suits me most with my setup.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is my commitment to my work and my agreed-upon deadline. I am very respectful of other people's time.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Helping people achieve better results, definitely.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: My clients often ask how I achieve my positive results, and I always respond that we can all achieve good results with dedication and perseverance.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I try to avoid mistakes and be as faithful as possible to each artist's concept. And if I make a mistake, I'm always open to corrections and discussion.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I always ask myself what they're really trying to convey with their songs, their references, and the sound style they want to achieve.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: My advice is not to be swayed by a professional's awards and academic titles alone. Also, listen to their work and see what they can achieve with their songs beyond the awards and academic titles. And if the professional has experience in the musical genre the client is looking for, even better.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My laptop, my hard drive, my headphones, my Ableton Push and a microphone.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started studying music production in Ableton Live in 2014/15 and have never stopped. I've always been looking to learn and discover more; it's something I'm truly passionate about. This has led me to work in recording studios alongside recording and mixing engineers, recording, producing, and mixing songs for pop and rock artists for approximately two years. I've also studied in mixing and mastering workshops, forums, and books from national academies. Between studying and constantly working on my productions or with my clients, I've been working for approximately 10 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is fresh, creative, and full of potential. I'm very careful not to sound like other artists in the industry; I could say I'm constantly working on something different.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Skrillex. His music has been a huge inspiration for me when I was starting out. I greatly respect him for his versatility as a producer and as an artist.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: One of the most common problems I see with my clients is overprocessing. They often believe that applying a lot of saturation, compression, or EQ without any criteria is what will take the sound to the next level. But, personally, I believe that today, with the excellent sound libraries available online, it's not as necessary to overprocess the sound. Just adjust what's necessary to incorporate into the final mix of each project.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I've mostly worked in electronic music genres, such as Tech House, Melodic Techno, Trap, and other EDM genres. But I've also worked in genres like Rock, Pop, and Hip Hop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My greatest skill is definitely identifying emotions in a piece of work, and thus being able to maximize it from the role I play in each project.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I always strive to better convey the song's feeling, whether through production, mixing, or mastering.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My typical work process is always based on listening to the song from beginning to end and getting a first impression of my client's work. Based on that, I seek to work on the song from the perspective of enhancing my client's work and pushing it to the highest level possible. I believe my work is about helping people achieve better results and, as a result, feel better about themselves for their effort and dedication.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio setup allows me to work remotely while still having the freedom to travel. I have my MacBook Pro, an external hard drive, my Audio Technica ATH M40X headphones, an Ableton Push 2, and a host of plugins like Waves Audio, FabFilter, Izotope, Cableguys, and the Ableton Live native plugins.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: The artists who inspire me the most are artists like Skrillex, Diplo, Kill the Noise, Don't Blink, Chris Lake, and others. As for rock bands, I grew up listening to bands like AC/DC, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pink Floyd, MJ, and others. Personally, I've always had very varied tastes.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Most of my work involves mentoring beginner or advanced artist producers. Secondly, mixing and mastering are some of the commissioned work I do the most.
