Interview with Taylor Volleberg

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Some of the music I've personally written and released. There's a couple songs I've written that I pushed myself beyond what I thought I could do and learned from it.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: currently finishing school and trying to build my clientele.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: not as of yet

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: both, they both have a place in this industry. Digital has come so far that it's almost too difficult to hear the difference from analog. Analog on the other has a feel, a quality that's tangible and you can't get that from digital.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I will give my full attention and skills to their wants and needs. I'm here to make their vision come to life. My promise is to meet and beat their expectations.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I have an intellectual and emotional connection to music that I find difficult to put into words, it's the thing in life I know I was meant to do. I'd like to make a living doing it.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That it doesn't take any practice, skill or knowledge of music theory to create music and mix it well. Its a science and an art.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What are your references for the sound you're looking for? What is your time frame? What is your goal for your mixes? Will you need multiple stems for different applications?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Communication is key, we need to be on the same page to make their idea a reality.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Bugera 1990 with an EVH 5150 2x12 cab, my LTD EC-256, Horizon Devices Precision Drive and my Mac.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started out as wanting to be in a touring band and then that changed to solo artist which then brought me to where I am now, wanting to be a mix engineer and producer. I've been a musician since 2001, I've been studying audio production since 2016. I'm currently finishing my bachelors in audio production at Full Sail.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Eclectic and diverse. I'm a cultured musician.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: If I could work with anyone it would be Devin Townsend. I love how creative and connected he is to his music. He really defines what it means to be in a flow state when making music.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Absolutely, take advantage of multiple octaves on different instruments. it can definitely fill out a song but make sure you feather EQ to have room for all the instruments sit with each other with clarity.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: I typically tend to stay in the rock/metal world of things but I love to be diverse and play around with many different genres.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: I'd like to think my song writing is my strongest skill.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I like to bring a balance and power to a mix. I want my low-end to hit hard, my high frequencies to shimmer and be clear while making sure the right amount of midrange cuts through the mix. I make sure all the elements live together nicely in the mix.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: If I'm mixing, I start with organization and color coding all my stems. Then I'll figure out what the focus of the mix is going to be then balance around that focus. I'll pan and then start working on EQ, compression and limiting as needed.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: Right now it's a small home studio. Yamaha HS7s, iMac and MacBook Pro. ProTools, Logic, Ableton and Studio One. 3 guitars and a bass. Novation Launchkey 3rd gen. All the plugins and virtual instruments I'll ever need. I mainly use Neural DSP Archetype amp sims for my guitar tones, Archetype Gojira and Nolly.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Misha Mansoor, Devin Townsend, Ice Nine Kills and many many more.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: Music Production but I'd like to focus more on mixing
