Interview with Enui
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My track Shapeshifter is probably one of my favourite tracks of my own, because it really reflects an emotional state i find myself in frequently and i feel the tracks resonates with a lot of people. The track was also played by Sasha at Burning Man and is also one of the tracks that got him interested in my music and also why he asked me to write a track for his album 'LUZOSCURA'. My track on that album is called 'Us' which i put a lot of work into and am also quite proud of.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on a dance music album with a client in New York and i'm working on an alternative country pop music project with a client from Melbourne. I am also tutoring students from around the world, mostly from Melbourne, Lisbon, USA and other parts of Europe.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: No one that i know of.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both, because choosing one over the other when you don't need to is somewhat narrow minded in my opinion. There are pros and cons to both.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That i will give each project my best as if it were my own.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Creativity, bringing someone's passion to life and helping them create a final product. It's a great feeling!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Everyone is different. I think everyone has different goals and tastes so I can't think of any common questions off the top of my head now. Maybe questions regarding how to release music. That might be the most common question amongst clients.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's easy. I think a lot of people don't realise how difficult it can be to make quality electronic music and I think a lot of people think because sounds are generated with a computer that it's easy and that the sounds are just pre-made. There are so many elements to music production and I think to combine all elements in a way that still provoke emotion can be quite challenging and time consuming.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What are your goals, what's your time frame, what's your budget?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would advise you to have a listen to my music and see if you think i can help you create the sound you're after.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, Solar Charger, Laptop Charger, Speakers, Ableton Push 3
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started teaching myself and i've been doing this for 12 years simply through sheer passion and dedication.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Emotional, Melodic, Soulful, well produced
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Be Svendsen. I love so many of his tracks. He makes music which is very soulful, complex and really well produced, whilst being inspired by an array of different cultures.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Try to emulate your favorite producers, but don't be afraid to go off onto a tangent because that's where you can discover truly original sounds, styles and ideas.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Most genres of electronic music, but mostly various types of dance music like melodic techno, breakbeat, Drum and Bass, deep house, minimal techno, techno, garage, etc etc
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My ability to make high quality tracks with quality sound design and mix in a fast time frame.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I can bring a quality sound and I believe i'm good at achieving the desired sound of clients. I am flexible and communicate well to ensure that the client is happy with the direction. If a client is uncertain and open to my advice i generally provide ideas and solutions as over 12 years i have developed a good sense of what does and doesn't work in a track generally speaking.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: For my own tracks i normally just started with the Drum Pattern and Bass or Chords and build from there. I like spontoneity because i think overthinking can hinder creativity and experimentation. For ghost production i ask the client to share their desired goals/sound and i generally ask for a bunch of reference tracks and for them to give me as much detail as they can about what they're after.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a home studio with Monitor Speakers, Ableton Push 3, Korg Minlogue XD MKII, Moog Mother 32, Midi Fighter Twister, Roland Audio Interface, a few different multipurpose microphones, CDJs, multiple monitor headphones
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Be Svendsen, NTO, Lorn, Burial, Meshuggah to name a few
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Ghost production, mixing, mastering, tutoring.
