Interview with Antonio D'Amato - TonnoBass
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, headphones, audio interface, a jack, and a bass (maybe a classic one).
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started playing bass at 14. Professionally, from when I was 17. Still doing this at 33, I worked a lot with some live bands with a huge number of live concerts, and I played in more than 1000 gigs until now.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Open your ears, open your heart, feel the vibe, and get the mood. You'll work in the right direction now. You have to feel it by yourself. Your heart will tell you.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Every kind of genre for the bass recordings, except metal and heavier genres. I usually enjoy a lot of Pop songs, and I'm comfortable with Disco, Funk, Rock, Soul, R&B, Country, Blues, Chill,
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Being musically at the service of the song. Music is emotion, music is dreaming. -For the bass rec, I always glue with other musicians, getting some nice interplay, and establishing a stable and solid groove, suitable for the song. -For the Mastering process, I listen to similar song to get the right vibe, and enhance what's in the mix, to get it to the next level.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I love to be at the service of the song, adding that extra taste, and never annoying the listener.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Bass recording: I use a tube preamp Studio Pre from MarkBass, in parallel with a dbx160a Dual Channel Apogee Duet to record CLEAN and AMP sound simultaneously. Great sounding and very versatile sounds. Song Master: I work in the box, with the finest plugins. Monitoring: Audeze LCD-X, headphone preamp Topping A70Pro; Pylon Opal Monitor.
