Interview with Bjorn Zinn

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Analog. There are always subtle imperfections and characteristics that digital plugins will never be able to fully reproduce, and those imperfections/characteristics culminate in adding so much character to a song.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: You will be satisfied with the end result, no matter how many revisions it takes.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: The biggest misconception is that mixing is just about making things louder or adding effects. Mixing is truly an art that involves sculpting emotion and energy making sure every sound supports the song’s feel and the artist’s vision. It’s just as creative as it is technical.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: Do you have any reference tracks? What kind of vibe or emotion do you want the track to have? Are there any specific effects at certain moments you want in the mix? Has there already been a rough mix applied to the song? Is there anything you dont want in the mix?

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Look for someone who can see your vision in the same way you can.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: 1176, SSL 9000, Black Box saturator, Pultec, Focusrite ISA

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I have been working as a childcare professional for 5 years, and have hit a dead end. I would like to one day be able to work on music full time.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: I like to blend styles. I go between melodic rap and R&B frequently. I like to infuse a lot of emotion into my music.

  17. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  18. A: I would love to work with Pharrell. He seems to understand creativity in a way that I have never observed from any other artist, save for maybe Rick Rubin.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  20. A: Shape tone by ear, use a channelstrip or an EQ that doesn't have any graphs or meters and do your best to achieve the sound you want with just your ears.

  21. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  22. A: Hip-hop, Rap, R&B, House, and Electronic are what I tend to work with the most, and what I like to make in my solo endeavors. My client work is majority boom-bap style rap.

  23. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  24. A: My strongest skill is vocal mixing, it's what I’m most confident in and what clients tend to come back for. I focus on making vocals sound clear, emotional, and professional, balancing technical precision with emotion so they sit perfectly in the mix and connect with listeners.

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: I bring clarity, emotion, and polish, making sure every element feels intentional and hits just right. Whether it’s a raw vocal or a full mix, I focus on preserving an artist’s energy and vision while enhancing the sound to feel polished, modern, and immersive. I help bring the idea to life.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: Once I get your stems and notes, I’ll listen through and get a feel for your vision. I start by organizing the session, then move into mixing focusing on balance, tone, clarity, automation, and other creative touches. I’ll send you a first draft, and we’ll go from there with revisions if needed. Communication is key, and I always aim to make sure you're fully happy with the final product.

  29. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  30. A: Hardware-wise, I record with a Rode NT1-A, tracked through a Focusrite ISA, and Klark Tekniks KT-2A. I am also assisted by a suite of professional mixing and mastering plugins that I have accumulated over the past 5 years. I use SoundToys, Valhalla, and Waves plugins very frequently. I mix on a variety of sources, multiple different pairs of headphones, speakers, and studio monitors to ensure consistency.

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: I’m inspired by artists and producers who push boundaries. Dylan Brady, Pharrell, Young Thug, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Drake, and Kanye West all influence my sound with their innovation, emotion, and raw creativity.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: Most of my work involves recording artists in my home studio, where I act as the recording engineer. I focus on capturing clean, professional vocals and performances for rappers, singers, and indie musicians. I'm hands-on with mic placement, gain staging, and coaching takes to get the best possible raw material for the mix. I track vocals through my Focusrite ISA and Klark Tekniks KT-2A.
