Interview with Duarte
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: One job that was extremely challenging was undoubtedly the recording of the Reggae band "Plantada Reggae". Before the recording, mixing and mastering were carried out, the pre-production was made and the choice of microphones had to be precise and concise in order to achieve the better quality process, so that when the recording day came, everything would go according to plan, without any problems.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I just finished a project, in which I also participated as an artist, in which as a sound technician I collaborated with the producer in the musical arrangement part, I did the recording, mixing and mastering. At the moment the theme is published on all digital channels, on YouTube with a music video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHuMZaEqJCE&feature=youtu.be
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog is always special! It adds unique features to the sound quality that are fantastic, but it is important to always learn how to deal with digital equipment and processing because nowadays, it is increasingly common to find equipment that works this way.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I always guarantee that if the material I receive in hand has good quality, your music will sound professional, ready to be published on all digital channels.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I like most is undoubtedly the unpredictability, the dynamics and the need to deal with pressure.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I usually always ask: What is your reference track, if you want this track to sound more natural or processed, if you have any demos recorded previously. Additionally, I can suggest some changes in terms of musical arrangement and production methods.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: First of all my power strip :) Let's discover first where is the energy point! I would bring with me my laptop, my DBX Pre-Amp, my Reverb/Delay Unit and finally my interface.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I graduated in sound engineering in Lisbon, where I discovered my infinite passion for sound and the artistic process! It was at that time that I created my home studio, where I recorded several artists, working in production, recording, mixing and mastering. I made my Internship in a professional sound studio, where I worked with live sound, recording bands, mixing, mastering, equipment maintenance, etc. From that point on, I started working with live sound complementing with freelance up until today. In live sound, I worked as a sound operator for theater shows, meetings, lectures and music concerts. Before moving to the Netherlands, I worked in audiovisuals, where it was extremely challenging in the sense that you really began to understand how sound systems work, having to solder equipment when it was broken, having to assemble sound systems from scratch, for large companies that also have event spaces. I am currently studying for my Bachelor's degree in Sound Engineering at the SAE Institute Amsterdam. https://sites.google.com/view/upper-third/home I graduated in sound engineering in Lisbon, where I discovered my infinite passion for sound and the artistic process! Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is diverse. I really enjoy Hip-Hop, so implementing processes that amplify the bass in music is something I enjoy working on and have experience with. In other musical styles, such as jazz or classical music, the use of processing is much less and the approach will certainly be different, which makes my work challenging and enriching.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always use a reference track in order to achieve better professional results.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work with Hip-Hop, but I'm familiar with all genres of music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Communication - Without the right understanding of what you really want your music to have, it is not possible to move on to the technical part. Equalization - With my experience over the years, I can guarantee that your tracks will have more presence and clarity. Effects - I can make your voice and your instrumental have a unique dynamic, with the use of the right effects, for the right purpose.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: My main goal is to bring clarity and dynamics. By adding more treble, more effects like delay, reverb, modulation, etc., your music gains a new life, which will make your listeners more connected to you, enabling your evolution as an artist, making you more famous and respected in the industry.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First of all, I always like to talk to the client to understand what their references are and then choose the approach for the technical work. Second, I open my project in Pro-Tools or Cubase in order to start structuring the entire artistic process. After mixing, I send the work done so far to the client to listen to and decide if they want to change anything. The mastering process is always done according to professional standards so that the song can be published on any possible digital platform. Between the mixing and mastering process, a check is always made on various types of speakers and spaces in order to confirm that your music is transmitted correctly and linearly on all audio systems.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My studio has some analog equipment consisting of a Pre-Amp, De-esser, Expander, Compressor, Enhancer, Gate & a 3D Multi-Engine Effects Processor. I always have the opportunity to test my work in various spaces, including professional studios.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: For Rock Steven Wilson. For Jazz Miles Davis. For New Pop Billie Eilish. For Hip-Hop 2Pac & Biggie. For R&B and Soul Marvin Gaye. For Reggae Bob Marley.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Where I work most regularly is in: Recording, Mixing, Mastering, Live Sound.
