Remote Mixing

Jamie Pullen on SoundBetter

Mix/ Recording Engineer + Producer with work featured on BBC Introducing. Voiceover engineering work has featured on Channel 4 + The Discovery Channel. I understand the amount of care we have towards our projects. When mixing, producing, or editing, I will do all I can to capture the feel and emotion, in ways that line up with your vision.

Hi, I hope you're well. My name is Jamie Pullen and I'm a mix engineer, recording engineer and music producer based in the South Coast (UK). There's nothing I love more than spending my time making and playing music.

I grew up on rock, hip hop, pop and metal to name only a few, and it was discovering artists such as Portugal. The Man, The Raconteurs, MF DOOM, Lorde and Earl Sweatshirt which made me realise that music was where I wanted to focus all of my time and energy.

When I'm not engineering I spend my time making beats and playing in my own band with four of my best friends. Because of this I understand how much work goes into getting an artist or band up and running. Therefor I make it my aim to be flexible and facilitating with artists of all sizes and experience, and do my best to adapt to a schedule and budget that works for you.

All in all my goal is to do whatever I can to help create music that we love. I want to get the most out of our remote sessions, so we can keep enjoying what we do, which happens to be the best thing, making music.

Thanks for checking my profile, feel free to get in touch to discuss any potential projects, questions or to just talk music.

Cheers,
Jamie

Interview with Jamie Pullen

  1. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  2. A: My Soundcraft Ghost Console, EHX little big muff, (sounds incredible on the Korg Minilogue synth,) My protools rig, my full keyboard rig (cheating I know) and finally my HS8 monitors, been using them for years.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I've been recording my own music since about 2015. I then studied audio engineering in College, back in 2018-2020. One of my tutors owned a studio, so I started covering shifts at his spot, where I still work now and run the place when he's off touring. It's been during my time covering shifts at this studio when I started getting my own clients which I bring in to said studio, or work remotely with from my home setup.

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: Depends on what I'm working on! I love an aggressive rock mix, I love an intimate, dynamic singer/songwriter mix. If it sounds good it is good.

  7. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  8. A: If they were still about... The White Stripes, so much raw energy, so good.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: "this one goes up to 11..."

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I spend most of my time working with rock, hip-hop and pop music.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: My persistence. Over the years, like almost all of us working on music do, I've experienced a fair amount of self doubt. Especially in the early days back in 2019/2020. If I didn't love music as much as I do I'm sure I would have called it quits a long time ago, however the love I have for making and working on music translates to quite the persistence.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: I feel all mixers are bringing their own unique taste to a song. No two mixes are going to be the same, I feel clients choose their mixers based upon this. Mixers who's taste they trust.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: When it comes to mixing, once the session is edited, organised and phase aligned where needed, I'll always start by listening to the rough, or getting a quick balance using broad strokes of mostly volume and pan. It's during this stage of looking at what's been discussed with the client and having these first listens where I start to learn about the feel and the artist's vision of the track. From then onwards my goal is to use all of the great tools at my disposal to get the song sounding as great as I can, still keeping what I learnt from those initial listens/ conversations with the client in mind.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: My home studio setup is a hybrid one, making the most out of my protools rig, with a hefty amounts of plugins, whilst still incorporating my beloved Soundcraft Ghost In-Line Console, which gets used on the slightly lower track count mixes. Although a console is not a necessity in this modern age, I adore a hands on approach, using gear with a little character. It's a console that always makes me want to be making music, especially with the rack of outboard gear I currently have hooked up to the patchbays. I also spend time at a couple of other commercial spots around Brighton, but almost all of my mixing these days is done here at my home.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: Discovering Portugal. The Man in my early teenage years is what made me realise I have to work in music, or at the very least, constantly be making music. At the moment I'm massively inspired by Manny Marroquin, Andy Wallace and Vance Powell when it comes to engineering and mixing, I've been really into producers such as 9th wonder and the Alchemist in recent times too, what they've been doing over the years is really incredible.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: Most of my work consists of recording, editing, producing and mixing all sorts of music, from folk acts, through hip-hop to rock and metal. I also produce, record, mix and sell beats.
