Interview with Combat City
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I wrote a custom song for a client who wanted to honor their late mother. It was emotional, beautiful, and deeply personal. I wrote the lyrics, recorded the vocals, and helped them find closure through music. Also I wrote and produced the album Combat City
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not as of yet.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital — it's flexible, fast, and allows me to deliver clean, high-quality music from anywhere. With the right plugins and creativity, digital can sound just as warm.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To treat your project like it’s my own — with care, originality, and professional quality. I don’t cut corners. I make sure it hits the soul or the market, whichever you need.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Q: Can you really turn my idea into a full song or jingle? A: Yes — that’s what I do best. You give me the vibe, and I’ll bring it to life, bar for bar, note for note.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That writing songs or jingles is fast and easy. It takes time to make something that’s original, emotionally honest, and actually hits.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I ask about your vision, mood, vibe, references, purpose (promo, gift, content, etc.), and anything you want me to include — names, locations, emotions, etc.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know your vision, or trust me to help shape it. Be open, honest, and specific with feedback — it helps me deliver something powerful and true to your story.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Mic, laptop, headphones, audio interface, and a solar charger — because even on an island, I’m dropping heat!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been writing songs since I was a teen and recording professionally for the past few years. I turned my pain and life experiences into music and built a home studio to create full-time.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Raw, soulful, street-smart, and emotional. My sound blends New York grit with heart, often switching between hard-hitting verses and smooth, catchy hooks.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I'd love to work with Muni Long, Nicki Minaj, and Childish Gambino. They each bring originality, depth, and emotion — I connect with that energy.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Don’t overthink the vibe. Sometimes the rawest ideas — your first melody, freestyle, or chorus — are the ones that hit hardest. Keep it real, not perfect.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I mostly work on R&B, hip-hop, drill, soul, and melodic trap. I also create fun, catchy jingles for brands and content creators who want something fresh and unique.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work from a home studio using a professional condenser mic, audio interface, and DAW (Pro Tools & FL Studio). My setup allows me to record clean vocals and mix efficiently.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I create custom songs and jingles tailored to each client's needs — from emotional storytelling to catchy, commercial-ready hooks. I bring unique lyrics, vocals, and vibe.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I’m writing custom songs for artists, jingles for brands and podcasts, and building my own music catalog that blends R&B, hip-hop, and soul with my NYC energy.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Turning emotions and ideas into music. I love when a client hears the final result and says, “This is exactly what I needed.” That reaction is everything to me.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Songwriting — I specialize in creating custom lyrics and melodies that feel personal, relatable, and real. I can write for any vibe: deep, fun, raw, or emotional.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring real emotion, storytelling, and a unique voice. Whether it's a drill anthem or a catchy jingle, I add flavor, feeling, and originality that connects with the listener.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First, I ask questions to understand your vision and vibe. Then I write lyrics and melody, send a draft, and make revisions based on your feedback until it’s perfect.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I’m inspired by artists like Lauryn Hill, Nicki Minaj, Muni Long, and Childish Gambino — storytellers who mix soul, depth, and creativity with undeniable talent.
